Alexandra Trusova did not qualify for the team event. Neither did Anna Shcherbakova. They were both very upset. Russia won gold in the team event. But the day after the individual short program, it was reported that Kamila Valieva had tested positive for doping at the Russian Championships. Her points were deducted. Russia took bronze. The International Skating Union announced that if Kamila Valieva took a podium in the individual event, the awards ceremony would not be held. Therefore, Trusova's main competitor was eliminated. Alexandra had hope of winning. She persistently trained her quads and landed all five quads in one program. She made history! But she still lost to Anna Shcherbakova. Anya had two clean programs. Meanwhile, Sasha fell 3A in the short program and stepped out on a 4T, underrotating her 3Lz+3t combination in g q in the free skate. Alexandra relied on technical difficulty and lost everything. For her, second place at the Olympics is a loss.
At the awards ceremony, the figure skater struggled to hold back tears.
family or sports?
Alexandra Trusova (Ignatova) never saw family and sports as mutually exclusive. She has repeatedly stated in interviews that from a young age she dreamed of a large family and children, but sports have always been a crucial part of her life. She says the question of "sports first, family second" wasn't a hard and fast one for her—everything in its own time.
history is being made before our eyes
After a historic performance with five quadruple jumps at the Beijing Olympics in February 2022, Alexandra Trusova said, "My dream of landing five quads has come true. I've been working towards this for a long time." She also openly admitted that she had expected to win gold, stating, "I thought that when I got there, I'd win. That didn't happen, so I was disappointed." The athlete later explained that during her performance before her final jump, she briefly considered the risks, but she decided to go all the way: "Thank God, I decided I'd never forgive myself for this and landed the fifth quad."
dream
Alexandra Trusova's Olympic dream began in earnest at the age of five in 2010, when she watched the Vancouver Winter Games with her family. After watching the performances and rooting for our figure skaters, she firmly decided to become an Olympic champion, a fate her grandfather had predicted for her. As a more mature child and junior, Sasha repeatedly stated in interviews that her entire career and training were built solely on qualifying for the Games and competing for first place.
Alexandra, in a fit of rage, hated Anna Shcherbakova, hated figure skating, hated the sport, hated the ice, hated the skates, hated the silver, hated Eteri Georgiyevna, hated all the other coaches, hated everyone. She only wanted her mother. She missed her. Later, of course, she would regret her hatred, but that would come later...
