Simon is a young man deeply mired in psychological problems. He lives with his mother in his hometown of Kirkville, barely mentioning his father. His personal life remains a mystery: his doctor notes that Simon refuses to discuss topics related to school or family life.
Since childhood, Simon had felt acute loneliness. He began seeing a psychiatrist, Dr. Purnell. As part of cognitive therapy, the doctor suggested he write a book in which he would document his emotions and experiences to "unload" the trauma from his mind.

His story and trauma
Key character detail: Since adolescence, Nicholas has exhibited symptoms of pyromania—an obsessive fascination with fire. Initially, he controlled his urges by playing with matches and lighters. But over time, this became insufficient. He found an abandoned bunker in the woods and used it as a safe place to continue experimenting with fire. One day, an adult caught him doing this and threatened to call the police. Nicholas fled, and the bunker was later reinforced with security.
The breaking point came after a family tragedy: his father died of lung cancer, and his mother abandoned him immediately afterward. In despair, Nicholas decided to satisfy his craving one last time: he set fire to the abandoned house.
