From childhood, he suffered from asthma, which caused him severe respiratory attacks. Despite this, he lived a life full of travel, adventure, and fighting in harsh conditions.

In his youth, he undertook long journeys throughout Latin America, witnessing poverty, social inequality, and exploitation. These journeys had a profound impact on his political beliefs.

How did he become a revolutionary?

During his time in Guatemala and then Mexico, he became more convinced of Marxist and revolutionary ideas. There, he met Fidel Castro and joined his movement.

In 1956, he sailed with Castro and a group of revolutionaries to Cuba with the goal of overthrowing the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.

This marked the beginning of the most famous part of his life:
The Cuban Revolution.

He was a guerrilla leader in the mountains and became a very important military figure in the revolution.

He was a heavy cigar smoker, and cigars became an integral part of his iconic image.

The truly bizarre paradox: a man suffering from asthma, relying on medication and devices to manage his breathing difficulties, was also a cigar smoker.

But smoking was also deeply intertwined with the culture of the Cuban revolutionaries, and Cuban cigars, in particular, became part of their public persona.
