Travis Bickle's appearance is a visual manifestation of his alienation. Here's his portrait:

He has a black-and-white mindset: he wants to "cleanse" the city and save those he considers innocent, but due to an inner emptiness and an inability to build relationships, he turns to violence. He is a tragic figure—a broken man trying to find meaning through radical action.
Loneliness and social isolation. Travis lives in isolation: he barely communicates with anyone, and his "interlocutors" are random passengers and his own diary entries. He observes the city from the cab, remaining outside the life of the metropolis.
Post-traumatic stress and inner instability. As a Vietnam veteran, he suffers from insomnia and inner tension. His psyche is on edge: minor stimuli trigger strong reactions, and the world seems hostile and dirty.
Black-and-white thinking. Travis divides people and events into "pure" and "corrupt," with no gray areas. For him, the city is a place to be "cleansed," and individuals are either victims or villains. This simplifies reality, but makes him extremely judgmental.
The need for mission and significance. It's vital for him to feel needed. First, he seeks meaning in politics (he admires the senator), then in "saving" people (the story with Iris). A mission gives him a sense of purpose, even if it's illusory.
Distorted notions of morality and heroism. He sincerely believes that violence can be a tool for justice. For Travis, becoming a "hero" means taking radical action, not negotiating or helping in other ways.
Difficulty building close relationships. He doesn't understand social norms and the subtleties of communication. His attempts to get closer (for example, with Betsy) seem awkward and even frightening because he relies on his internal schemas rather than on the actual cues of the other person.
Projections and idealization. He sees 12-year-old Iris not as a real person, but as a symbol of "innocence" that needs to be saved. This allows him to justify his actions and give them a higher meaning, but ignores the real meaning.
