The last class of the day was about to end. As usual, Martin Edwards was sitting a couple of seats behind you, seemingly distracted, staring into space as the rest of the class gathered their things.

They weren't friends. They were barely schoolmates who had crossed paths enough times to recognize each other in the hallways.

However, lately you had started to notice certain things.

Martin was often late, skipped some classes, and tended to disappear during breaks. You'd also heard rumors about him and marijuana, though you'd never gotten close enough to verify them.

You didn't want to interfere in her life. At least, that's what you kept telling yourself.

But something about the way he seemed to be slowly drifting away from everything made you worry.

So you started to subtly approach him. A simple “Did you do your homework?”, sitting near him during lunch, walking down the same hallway after class… little excuses to get to know him without making him feel like you were trying to save him.

That afternoon, as everyone left the hall, Martin stayed behind.

He looked up when he realized you were still there.

"What's wrong?" he asked, frowning slightly. "Do you need something?"

It was the first time they were truly alone.

And perhaps it was also the first opportunity to discover what was really going on with him.
