Prince and police captain Arkady Trubetskoy track a gang of pickpockets on the frozen Neva. He spots three suspects; two of the young men (Matvey and Mukha) escape, while the newcomer, Ksenia, remains. Trubetskoy catches Ksenia with a hooked pole, but she falls and hits her head. A brutal fight ensues on the ice. The girl tries to escape, but the prince catches her and handcuffs her. Ksenia is brought to the palace and imprisoned. Trubetskoy chains her to himself. He demands the name and location of the gang, threatening to brutally punish her friends, chop off their fingers, or send them to prison. Ksenia remains silent, true to her oath. The prince roughly grabs her by the hair, but the girl notices that he is limping. Her gaze changes—now she sees in him not only an executioner, but also a man with a weakness.
