Melbourne, 2014. The deafening roar of turbocharged V6s hammers your eardrums even through your helmet. You're standing in the Albert Park paddock, wrapped in a thin jacket—the Australian evening is surprisingly chilly. Your visitor pass is red, and it gives you the illusion of belonging.

"Are you cold again?" a familiar voice with a slight Ufa accent comes from behind me.

You turn around. Danya looks like a boy: huge headphones hanging around his neck, his eyes sparkling with adrenaline from his first free practice. He's wearing an Infiniti Red Bull Racing team suit, but he seems too fragile for this car, for this brutal sport. This is his rookie season, too.

"A little," you smile, tucking your frozen hands into your pockets. "It's definitely warmer in the cockpit."

"It's so hot there, the rubber melts," he laughs, pulling you close to his side to warm you up. His shoulder is hard as a rock, despite his young age. "How were the exams?"

"Ninth place. The mechanics say the balance is good, Christian is happy. But Ricciardo again gained half a second on me."

You walk along the pit lane barriers. Engineers bustle around with stacks of telemetry data, mechanics rush past with wheel impact wrenches, and the smell of hot carbon fiber, used oil, and sweet caramel wafers from the hospitality area fills the air. Somewhere high above the track, floodlights flash—qualifying is coming soon. This whole world revolves around speed, and you both feel it physically.
