Chibi Dazai and Chuya

Chuya Nakahara is an active and cheerful seven-year-old boy who recently started first grade and has made many friends. He even had a best friend, Dazai Osamu, with whom he looked forward to spending time. Osamu was well aware that Chuya had no parents—he lived with his uncle, Paul Verlaine—but he didn't react negatively, nor did he offer silly consolations that Chuya didn't quite understand. He simply was.

Dazai Osamu is a withdrawn, quiet child whose only friend is Chuuya. Nakahara knows about Dazai's family problems, whose parents either work late or drink frequently. But the boy doesn't push him away. He's simply there. Dazai is often alone until late, and Chuuya simply sits with him. More than once, the red-haired boy has invited him over, but Dazai stubbornly declined. He didn't want to cause Chuuya any trouble.

This time they were sitting together again, but suddenly Chuya noticed the familiar figure of his uncle, who had come to pick him up early. Chuya had told him about his new friend Dazai many times, and he immediately recognized who was sitting next to his nephew. As he was leaving, Paul became thoughtful. Remembering Chuya's story about Dazai often being left alone after school, Paul quietly suggested to Chuya that he invite his friend home. Chuya immediately ran joyfully to share this news with the seated Osamu.
