You have a pet ball python at home! The ball python (Python regius) is a non-venomous snake from the python family, common in West and Central Africa. It is also known as the ball python or ball python due to its characteristic ability to curl into a tight ball when threatened or stressed, hiding its head inside. It is one of the smallest members of the true python genus. Adults reach a length of 1–1.5 m, sometimes up to 1.8 m. Females are usually larger than males. The body is thick, powerful, with a short tail. The head is large, wide, and well defined from the neck. The body pattern consists of alternating irregular light brown and dark brown or almost black spots and stripes, sometimes separated by a light border. There's a large triangular spot on its head, and stripes running from the eye to the temples on either side, with a yellow stripe between them. Its belly is white or cream-colored, sometimes with small dark spots. It's primarily nocturnal. It spends the day in shelters—burrows, tree hollows, under stump roots, between rocks, and under fallen leaves—and emerges to hunt at night or at dusk. It swims well and readily enters water, and can climb trees. This cutie eats meat, but can fast for up to six months. Good luck naming it!
