The night was heavy, rain lashing the empty bridge. Lily was returning home after her shift when a truck lost control on the slippery road. It all happened too fast: a sharp screech of brakes, a thud, the bridge shaking—and she fell.

She didn't reach the water.

A web shot out of the darkness, and someone in a red and black suit caught it at the last moment. The jerk was so sharp that Lily caught her breath. A few seconds later, he was standing with her on the roof at the edge of the tower, in the rain and neon.

He gently lowered her to the ground, but didn't let go right away. The mask slid back, and Lily saw Tom—wet dark dreadlocks, a silver lip ring, and a look that held too much fear.

“Breathe,” he said hoarsely, touching her cheek. “Are you okay?”
