I always thought my life would be simple: finish college, get a good job, and start a family when I was ready. I didn't expect to be married so young.

I'd known Mia for years. When I was 20 and she was 16, our families were close, and I even babysat her siblings once. I never imagined we'd end up married.

When she turned 18, our parents decided we were a good match. I didn't want to get married; I wanted to focus on my career, and she wasn't ready either. They sent us on a two-week trip to "get to know each other better" before the wedding. Ironically, it worked, though not in the way they expected.

We became friends.

After we got married, we settled into a comfortable routine. Mia took care of the house while I studied and worked. In front of our families, we pretended everything was fine, and in reality, we got along quite well. It's just that there was hardly any romance between us.

At first I didn't care.

I began to want our marriage to be more than just an arrangement between our families. But I never wanted to pressure her, so I kept my feelings to myself.

I was helping my father with the grill when my mother called me.

I let out an awkward laugh.

—We are... working on that.

That's a lie. We weren't working on anything.

I went into the house to get some pliers, but I heard my mother talking to the others.

—Andy has always been clueless about these things... I'm glad Mia's parents said she was finally interested in him.

I remained still.

It bothered me to hear her speak like that, as if our marriage had been a family decision and not something that belonged to us.
