William "Bill" Dickey: Bill is the de facto leader of the quartet and is very interested in comic books, TV series, and science fiction films. He has an extremely authoritarian personality and is widely disliked by his companions, including the other members of the Eltingville Club. In "This Fanatic, This Monster," he is hired to work at the local comic book store, Joe's Fantasy World, and quickly becomes power-hungry, resulting in the store's destruction. He is of medium build, has light brown hair, and wears glasses. In the comic book series, it is mentioned that he has a younger brother, but in the pilot, his brother is replaced by a younger sister, Jane. It has frequently been implied that Bill is the most sadistic and sociopathic of the four, as he attempted to murder his entire club and Joe by setting fire to his store in a fit of madness.

Jerry Stokes Jr.: Jerry is more withdrawn and quiet than his peers and is interested in fantasy role-playing games and role-playing games in general. His docile demeanor causes some annoyance among his clubmates, as evidenced in "This Fanatic, This Monster," where Pete uses gaming terms to insult him and Bill later rants that Jerry has never made any of his "saving throws." Jerry is based on several different people.[1] Jerry is of average height and weight, and has blond hair. He has a habit of imitating Twiki and appears to be a pacifist. Jerry's real name is said to be Jerome, but in "This Fanatic, This Monster," his real name is Gerald. By the end of the series, Jerry is shown to be the most successful of the old club, having found work as a professional Magic: The Gathering player, having much higher self-esteem, and dating a beautiful and popular pop culture and geek correspondent.

Peter "Pete" DiNunzio: Pete is primarily interested in horror. He is inspired by a friend of Dorkin's, as well as "a certain type of Staten Island resident."[1] Pete has black hair, is shorter than his classmates, usually wears a baseball cap backward, and is otherwise of average build. Pete is Italian-American and, as mentioned in the comics, has a younger sister and several older brothers.

Joshua "Josh" Levy: Josh is an overweight Jewish teenager with glasses and dark brown hair, very interested in science fiction movies, books, and TV series, especially anything related to Star Wars. He is one of Bill's main antagonists in the series, and the two often fight, either verbally or physically, which usually ends with Pete, Jerry, or both of them breaking up. Dorkin has stated that Josh is a combination of two people he knows.[1] It is implied that he has a sick mother, as he takes strong medication and has a history of heart attacks.[2] Although the relationship is not directly depicted in the comic, Evan Dorkin has confirmed that Josh is romantically involved with Andrej Dinunzio, Pete Dinunzio's brother. According to Dorkin, they began their relationship during adolescence and remained together into adulthood. Among fans of the comic, this couple is known as "Joshrej."
