The world of Demon Slayer: set during the Taishō era (1912–1926). It looks like ordinary Japan on the surface—cities, villages, trains, schools, shops, and families—but hidden from ordinary people is a terrifying supernatural world ruled by demons.

🏯 The Human World

Most humans have no idea demons exist.

People live normal lives in villages and cities, working, traveling, going to festivals, and riding trains. But once night falls, traveling through isolated forests, mountains, or rural roads can become extremely dangerous.

Demons usually hunt after sunset because sunlight is deadly to them.

He created most of the demons that exist and controls them through his blood.

Muzan’s ultimate obsession is overcoming his greatest weakness:

the sun.

Because of this, he searches for anything that could allow him to become completely immortal and immune to sunlight.

Muzan’s strongest demons belong to an elite group called the Twelve Kizuki.

They are divided into:

Upper Ranks

The strongest demons.

Upper Rank One → Upper Rank Six

These demons are extraordinarily powerful and can survive against even elite Demon Slayers.

Lower Ranks

Also numbered from One to Six.

They are weaker than the Upper Ranks, although even a Lower Rank demon can be extremely dangerous to ordinary humans.

Personality: Gentle, calm, compassionate, intelligent, and extremely perceptive.

Kagaya isn’t a Hashira and isn’t known for physical combat. His strength is leadership, strategic thinking, and his ability to understand people.

🌿 Personality

Kagaya speaks softly and rarely shows anger. Even the Hashira, who can be incredibly stubborn and difficult to control, listen to him with genuine respect.

He doesn’t treat the Demon Slayers as disposable soldiers. He considers them people who are sacrificing their lives to protect others.

He remembers the names and achievements of fallen Corps members and genuinely mourns their deaths.

His kindness isn’t weakness, either. Kagaya understands the personalities of the Hashira extremely well and knows how to bring them together despite their differences.

🩸 His Family Curse

The Ubuyashiki family has been connected to Muzan Kibutsuji for generations.

Because Muzan originated from the Ubuyashiki bloodline, the family has been cursed with a severe illness. Members of the family historically die young.

Kagaya’s condition eventually becomes extremely serious, leaving his body fragile and his vision severely damaged.

Despite this, he continues leading the Corps.

Kagaya’s greatest weapon isn’t a sword.

It’s his mind.

🌊 Giyu Tomioka — Water Hashira

Age: 19

Personality: Quiet, serious, reserved, observant.

Giyu is one of the most emotionally distant Hashira. He rarely talks unnecessarily and often appears cold, but underneath that silence is someone deeply compassionate.

Past: His older sister Tsutako sacrificed herself to protect him from a demon. Later, his friend Sabito died during Final Selection while protecting other candidates. Giyu survived, but he developed intense survivor’s guilt and believed he didn’t deserve his position as Hashira.

Strength: Exceptional swordsmanship, speed, reflexes, and defensive ability. He developed his own Water Breathing technique, Dead Calm.

Loves: Peace, quiet, protecting innocent people, and people who genuinely understand him.
Hates: Demons, unnecessary cruelty, and himself when his survivor’s guilt takes over.

Relationships: He respects the other Hashira but isn’t particularly close with most of them. He has a complicated friendship with Shinobu Kocho, who frequently teases him.

🔥 Kyojuro Rengoku — Flame Hashira

Age: 20
Height: 177 cm
Breathing: Flame Breathing
Personality: Extremely energetic, honorable, enthusiastic, and compassionate.

Kyojuro is probably the most openly passionate Hashira. He speaks loudly, eats enthusiastically, and takes his responsibilities extremely seriously.

Past: His mother taught him that those born with strength have a responsibility to protect the weak. His father, Shinjuro, was once a Flame Hashira but eventually abandoned the role after losing faith in the Corps.

Kyojuro continued forward despite his family’s problems.

Strength: Extraordinary physical strength, swordsmanship, endurance, and determination. His Flame Breathing specializes in powerful offensive attacks.

Loves: His mother, his brother Senjuro, good food—especially bento—and protecting people.
Hates: Cowardice, injustice, demons who hurt innocent people, and giving up.

Relationships: He deeply loves his younger brother and tries to encourage him. He respects the other Hashira and treats even inexperienced Demon Slayers with kindness.

🦋 Shinobu Kocho — Insect Hashira

Age: 18
Height: 151 cm
Breathing: Insect Breathing
Personality: Polite, cheerful, intelligent, teasing—but hiding tremendous anger.

Shinobu almost always smiles, even when she’s furious.

Past: Her parents were killed by demons. Later, her older sister Kanae was killed by a demon, leaving Shinobu devastated.

Unlike most Hashira, Shinobu lacks the physical strength necessary to decapitate demons. Instead, she developed specialized wisteria-based poisons and uses a uniquely designed sword to inject them.

Strength: Exceptional intelligence, speed, agility, medical knowledge, and poison-making.

Loves: Her sister’s memory, butterflies, medicine, helping people, and her adopted family.
Hates: Demons—especially those who casually destroy human lives.

Relationships: She was extremely close to Kanae. She also became a guardian figure to Kanao Tsuyuri. Her relationship with Giyu is amusing because she constantly pokes fun at his awkward personality.

🎵 Tengen Uzui — Sound Hashira

Age: 23
Height: 198 cm
Breathing: Sound Breathing
Personality: Flashy, confident, dramatic, competitive, but surprisingly caring.

Tengen constantly describes himself as “flashy.” His personality is extravagant, but his priorities are actually centered around protecting lives.

Past: He was raised as a shinobi under brutal conditions. His father trained his children harshly, and Tengen eventually rejected that lifestyle.

He later married Hinatsuru, Makio, and Suma.

Strength: Massive physical strength, speed, exceptional hearing, explosives, dual Nichirin swords, and combat experience as a shinobi.

Loves: His wives, flashy things, music, victory, and protecting his comrades.
Hates: His father’s philosophy, meaningless sacrifice, and situations where people treat lives as disposable.

Relationships: He genuinely values his wives and considers their lives extremely important. He also develops a strong bond with Tanjiro and the others.

🌫️ Muichiro Tokito — Mist Hashira

Age: 14
Height: 160 cm
Breathing: Mist Breathing
Personality: Initially detached, absent-minded, blunt, and seemingly emotionless.

Muichiro became a Hashira incredibly young.

Past: His twin brother Yuichiro was killed by a demon. Muichiro himself suffered severe trauma and temporarily lost many of his memories.

His memories and emotions gradually return as he reconnects with his past.

Strength: A prodigy. His speed, swordsmanship, reflexes, and ability to learn techniques are extraordinary for his age. He became Hashira only a few months after becoming a Demon Slayer.

Loves: His brother, people who remind him of kindness, and eventually the people around him.
Hates: Demons and anyone who threatens innocent people.

Relationships: He initially keeps everyone at a distance, but his relationship with Kotetsu and his interactions with Tanjiro help bring back his more compassionate side.

💗 Mitsuri Kanroji — Love Hashira

Age: 19

Personality: Extremely affectionate, emotional, cheerful, shy, and kind.

Mitsuri’s unusual physical abilities come from her unique body. She has extraordinary muscle density despite her appearance.

Past: Mitsuri originally struggled with feeling different from everyone else. Her unusual hair, enormous appetite, and physical strength made finding acceptance difficult.

She eventually joined the Demon Slayer Corps and became the Love Hashira.

Strength: Incredible physical strength, flexibility, speed, and an unusual whip-like Nichirin sword.

Loves: Food, especially sakura mochi, romance, cute things, her friends, and making people happy.
Hates: Cruelty, loneliness, rejection, and people hurting those she loves.

Relationships: She is close to Shinobu and has a particularly important bond with Obanai Iguro, who deeply cares for her.

🌪️ Sanemi Shinazugawa — Wind Hashira

Personality: Aggressive, impatient, intimidating, stubborn, but deeply protective.

Sanemi looks like someone who hates everyone—but much of his anger comes from grief.

Past: His mother became a demon and attacked the family. Sanemi was forced to kill her. His younger brother Genya survived, but Sanemi deliberately pushed him away because he wanted Genya to stay away from the Demon Slayer world.

Strength: Exceptional physical power, speed, endurance, combat instincts, and an extremely rare blood type called Marechi, whose scent is especially intoxicating to demons.

Loves: His surviving family, especially Genya despite how harshly he treats him.
Hates: Demons, weakness, and anyone threatening his family.

Relationships: His relationship with Genya is heartbreaking because his harshness is actually an attempt to protect his brother.

🐍 Obanai Iguro — Serpent Hashira

Age: 21
Height: 162 cm
Breathing: Serpent Breathing
Personality: Strict, suspicious, disciplined, and harsh—but deeply loyal.

Obanai often appears cold toward others, but he cares intensely about the Demon Slayer Corps.

Past: He was born into a family that worshipped a serpent-like demon. He was abused and eventually escaped with the help of a relative, but carried tremendous guilt and trauma afterward.

His mouth was deliberately cut when he was young, leaving him with scars.

Strength: Highly precise swordsmanship, flexibility, agility, and exceptional battlefield awareness. His snake Kaburamaru also helps him perceive attacks.

Loves: Mitsuri, the Demon Slayer Corps, discipline, and loyalty.
Hates: Demons, betrayal, corruption, and himself because of his past.

Relationships: He is deeply in love with Mitsuri. His feelings are usually subtle, but his actions make them obvious.

🪨 Gyomei Himejima — Stone Hashira

Age: 27
Height: 220 cm
Breathing: Stone Breathing
Personality: Gentle, spiritual, emotional, serious, and incredibly humble.

Gyomei is physically enormous but surprisingly gentle.

Past: He cared for orphaned children at a temple. One night, a demon attacked them. The children were killed, and Gyomei was falsely blamed because he survived.

That tragedy eventually led him toward the Demon Slayer Corps.

Strength: Considered the strongest Hashira in physical combat. He uses a unique weapon consisting of a spiked flail and axe rather than a traditional sword. His strength, senses, experience, and battle awareness are extraordinary.

Loves: Children, prayer, protecting people, and his comrades.
Hates: Demons and anyone who exploits innocent people.

Relationships: He is respected by virtually every Hashira. Even Sanemi, despite his aggressive personality, holds tremendous respect for Gyomei.

🌊 Tanjiro Kamado

Role: The emotional center of the group.

Tanjiro is kind, polite, hardworking, and extremely compassionate—even toward demons.

His family was killed by Muzan, while his sister Nezuko was turned into a demon. Tanjiro therefore joins the Demon Slayer Corps searching for a way to turn her human again.

Strength: Exceptional smell, swordsmanship, endurance, adaptability, and determination.

Loves: His family, Nezuko, his friends, helping people, and good food.

He originally wears a boar’s head mask, which became one of his most recognizable features.

He created Beast Breathing himself based on his life in the mountains.

Aoi isn’t one of the main traveling fighters, but she’s an important friend and ally to the group.

She’s strict, hardworking, practical, and easily frustrated by Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke’s ridiculous behavior.

She works at the Butterfly Mansion, helping injured Demon Slayers recover.

Hates: Laziness, reckless behavior, and people making her job harder.

🔫 Genya Shinazugawa

Age: 16
Height: 180 cm
Position: Demon Slayer
Weapon: Shotgun + Nichirin sword
Breathing: None
Personality: Aggressive, stubborn, blunt, insecure, but caring underneath.

Past: Genya’s mother became a demon and killed several members of his family. Sanemi killed her to protect Genya, but Genya misunderstood what happened and blamed his brother. Later, he realized the truth and regretted it. He joined the Demon Slayer Corps partly because he wanted to become strong enough to reconnect with Sanemi.

Strength: Genya can’t use Breathing Styles, but he has unusual physical strength and can eat demon flesh to temporarily gain demonic abilities. He also fights with a shotgun and Nichirin weapons.

Loves: His brother, his family, becoming stronger, and people who genuinely care about him.

Hates: Demons, being called weak, feeling helpless, and being rejected by Sanemi.
