Middle Ages

Greeting

In a small medieval village, society was governed by a rigid hierarchy that dictated your life and future. This hierarchy was comprised of three classes: peasants, knights, and nobility. And then there was the unspoken but secretive Church, where any perceived transgression, even one deemed treasonous or frowned upon, could be fatal.

The people were poor because of how trade was managed, and also because the kings rejoiced in the misery of the peasants and squandered the money that was easily obtained thanks to the sacrifice of the poorest.

Culture was a very important topic in the village and had to be respected; men were important according to this culture. Unfortunately, the same was not true for women, who had to accept this way of life or not live at all.

Meanwhile, in one of the many small houses made of wood and mud with thatched roofs, lived a man named Keigo and his wife, Akira. They had a son some years before, but life wasn't good because Keigo was a chauvinistic peasant, and this dominance wasn't frowned upon in the community; in fact, it was even considered acceptable. Furthermore, he was highly respected in the village, and almost no one dared to cross him.

what was the Middle Ages like?

Living in the Middle Ages (5th to 15th centuries) depended entirely on social class. For the vast majority of the population, who were peasants, life was hard, rural, and marked by physical labor from sunrise to sunset, dependence on harvests, and the constant threat of disease and scarcity. Society was divided into three main groups: those who prayed (the clergy), those who fought (the nobility), and those who worked (the peasantry). Life in the countryside (Peasants): Hard work: They worked the land from dawn till dusk, cultivating wheat, barley, and rye. Simple housing: They lived in small houses made of wood and mud with thatched roofs, sometimes sharing a single space with animals. Basic diet: They ate dark bread, porridge, legumes, onions, and soups; Meat was a very rare luxury. Heavy taxes: They had to pay tribute to the feudal lord for using the mill, the oven, or crossing the roads. The life of the nobility and knights: Power and lands: They lived in castles or large estates, and their main role was warfare, defending the territory, and administering local justice. Military training: Knights trained from childhood and participated in tournaments to prove their courage. Luxuries: They had access to a varied diet with abundant meat, game, wine, and fine clothes. The role of the Church and culture: The center of time: Church bells marked the hours of the day and the rhythm of community life. Religion and festivities: The Catholic faith explained everything, and the year was filled with numerous festivals and days of rest for religious reasons. Refuge and knowledge: Monasteries housed books and knowledge, being the only path to study for a few. Challenges and health: Low life expectancy: Famines and epidemics like the Black Death killed to millions of people. Poor hygiene: There were no modern health systems and medicines were based on traditional remedies or myths

religion of the Middle Ages

Theological Duality: Eve vs. Mary. Eve (the sinner): The Church blamed Eve for original sin. Therefore, it considered women weak beings, prone to temptation, and morally dangerous to men. Mary (the ideal): The Virgin Mary was the supreme model of obedience, purity, and motherhood. Women were required to imitate this submission, although the ideal was unattainable for ordinary people. Control over the body and marriage. Marital submission: The Church taught that women should blindly obey their husbands in the home. Obsession with chastity: Virginity was valued above all else.

Women in the Middle Ages did not have the same legal or social rights as men and were legally subordinate to them. Their lives were defined by the control of their father and, later, their husband, although their actual situation varied considerably depending on their social class and marital status. Legal Status and Property: Male Guardianship: Single and married women were legally dependent on a man (father, husband, or brother). Inheritance: Family property usually passed entirely to the firstborn son. Widowhood: Widows gained unique legal autonomy, being able to manage their own property and businesses. Arranged Marriages: Weddings were economic or political pacts decided by families, not based on love.

The man as owner and protector in the home. Absolute authority: The husband was considered the "master" of the house; the laws granted him the right and the duty to rule his wife. Legitimate violence: The law and custom allowed the man to apply moderate physical punishments to his wife if he considered her to be disobedient, without this being seen as a crime. Control of fidelity: Men obsessively monitored the chastity and fidelity of their wives to ensure that the children who inherited the inheritance were legitimate.
