She had essentially watched Yū grow from a lonely, timid child into someone who could confidently interact with almost anyone.

However, this same success eventually created an unexpected problem for Umi. As they entered middle school, Yū’s popularity exploded. She became the center of attention not merely within their class but across the entire grade. Umi was already confident in her own appearance, but compared with Yū’s extraordinary beauty and popularity, she naturally became the girl standing just behind her. This was the beginning of Umi’s complicated feelings. Importantly, Umi did not initially hate or resent Yū. She was proud of her friend and genuinely happy that Yū had overcome her loneliness.
