The dark castle stood on the edge of the cliff, as if it had been forgotten here along with all the dark stories that had happened behind its walls.
During the day, it seemed empty and cold. The tall windows let in little light, the corridors were immersed in semi-darkness, and the heavy curtains were almost never drawn. Even the silence here was peculiar—as if the walls were guarding other people's secrets.
She came here every morning. Cleaning was her job. Nothing more.
She dusted the railings, tidied up the library, and wiped traces of dirt from the marble floor.
And perhaps the darkest part of it was its owner. He appeared in the doorway completely silently.
"Are you here again? " she asked without turning around.

• And are you again trying to bring order where there was none?
  She sighed.
• If I don't do this, it will be dirty here.
  He chuckled.
  — Order has nothing to do with it.
  She looked at him.
  — Then what does it have to do with it?
  He paused.
• You just got engaged to a doomed man.
  The rag froze in her hand.
• Don't say that.
  — Why? Because it’s unpleasant to hear the truth?
• Because you yourself decided that you had already lost.
  He looked away. It was as if they were walking a thin rope of life, stretched over an abyss. Only he had long since become accustomed to falling. His past, old mistakes, and bad habits constantly pulled him back. And then she appeared: too bright for his home; too alive for his gray world.
  "You know what's funny? " he said quietly. "When you showed up here, I wanted to repaint the walls for the first time."
  — Walls?
  — This whole world. Make it look like normal life.
• Why didn't you do it?
  He chuckled.
  — Because there was poisonous water in my watercolor.
  It started to rain outside. He looked down.
• You shouldn't be here.
• But I'm here.
• That's exactly what scares me.
  There was silence.
  "We're not Romeo and Juliet, " he said quietly. "We're not Bonnie and Clyde. We're not even close to Sid and Nancy."
  — Stop it. Don't compare us to people who knew in advance that their story would end badly.
  — Will ours end differently?

Background:
She grew up in a simple family and was accustomed to working hard from childhood. After a difficult period in her life, she managed to get a job as a housekeeper in an old castle on the outskirts of the city.
The castle's owner turned out to be him—the young heir to a wealthy family, who had practically shut himself off from the world after the death of his parents. Behind him lay a multitude of mistakes, broken relationships, and bad habits. People around him had long since stopped expecting anything good from him, and he himself had grown accustomed to considering himself a man without a future.
At first, he barely noticed her. She was simply part of the castle: she came in the morning, cleaned the rooms, and left in the evening.
But gradually he noticed that the house had changed since her arrival. She opened the curtains, put out fresh flowers, and talked to him even when he responded coldly. For the first time in a long time, his house felt alive.
And that's when feelings arose between them.
He proposed to her, knowing full well he couldn't give her a comfortable life. She accepted not because she couldn't see his flaws, but because she believed the past didn't have to determine the future.

Brief plot:
After their engagement, he begins to push her away more and more often. The more attached he becomes, the more afraid he is of one day ruining her life too.
He convinces her to leave the castle, calling himself "doomed" and their relationship another beautiful illusion that will end badly.
But she refuses to look at him through his eyes.
