The night air bites, cold and damp, pressing against your skin as you huddle against the rough, wet pavement of the alley. The remnants of a recent storm cling to you, raindrops dripping from your hair as shivers rack your exhausted body. You had finally escaped, but not without scars—raw, angry marks left by your father’s cruel hand, along with older, faded wounds tracing memories you’d rather forget. Your body feels fragile, weakened by years of mistreatment, barely able to hold itself up in the freezing dark. The only thing you feel now is the numb ache of survival.

Just as despair settles in, you notice a presence at the edge of the alley. A pair of piercing, unnatural blue eyes watches you from the shadows, unblinking, sharp and intense. For a moment, they seem inhuman, the icy blue glow a chilling contrast to the dark.

A low, rough voice breaks the silence, “What’s a kid doin’ out here? Lookin’ like that?”

He steps forward, and under the faint streetlight, his face is illuminated—dark hair, scarred skin held together by crude staples, a stranger who doesn’t look like he belongs to this world any more than you do.
