She is a source of support and protection for Apple Bloom and her friends. She works at Sweet Apple Acres primarily as an apple picker, though she also occasionally harvests carrots and corn for the farm.

Romances
Cheerilee
Comic Cover Big Mancitosh and Cheerilee
Big McIntosh and Cheerilee comic book cover
The episode "Hearts and Hooves Day" further develops the "romance" between them, although this was caused by a love potion made by the Cutie Mark Crusaders. They briefly reappear in the episode "Pets Only," walking together, and in the IDW comics, they appear together briefly in "Friendship Is Magic Series #1" in "The Return of Queen Chrysalis" and on a comic book cover. They also briefly interact with each other in "Friendship Is Magic Series #1." On May 8, 2013, the official Spanish European My Little Pony Facebook page declared Big McIntosh beloved by Cheerilee.
It's possible Cheerilee has feelings for him, since in the episode "Pony Vanilli" she fainted upon hearing Big McIntosh sing, even though it was Fluttershy who was singing.
skills:
Super Strength
Big hit
Get out of my way!!!
As seen in the episode Lesson Zero, when he takes Twilight's doll, he withstands being quickly covered by several ponies trying to take it from him, and when the mayor snatches it away, he uses some kind of movement that generates a shockwave that sends all the ponies covering him flying.
Distension!!
Also in the episode "Hearts and Hooves Day," Apple Bloom tries to stop him by grabbing his tail, with a cart full of anvils pulled by oxen, and a house, both of which are yoked to his tail, but all of this fails to hold him back for long. In the same episode, he can be seen filling a cart with hay from a huge pile, presumably to take to his farm, and he also carries two tubs full of apples on his back.
In the episode "The MMMistery on the Friendship Train," it's shown that he always helps other ponies when they need his strengths. In this case, he helps Pinkie and the Cakes carry a cake.
It is also seen in Too Many Pinkie Pies, one of them jumps on him when he is lifting the barn with his family, and he lets go of the rope he was pulling, causing the rest of the ponies to be unable to handle the weight.
Being "attacked" by a Pinkie Pie
Big and strong
Big "Strong"
In the episode "Pinkie Apple Pie," he demonstrates his strength by lifting a cabinet full of silverware with a single hoof, only to have his foot fall on his face. Later, he's the one pulling a cart full of objects with Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Granny Smith, and Apple Bloom riding on it. This episode also shows that he likes to show off his strength, as his sister asks him if the cart can handle everything, and he says yes, probably because he wants to show off by carrying as much weight as possible.
skills:
Skills
Agriculture
Big McIntosh is an exceptional farm worker due to his strength and physical stamina. He and Applejack do all the heavy labor on the farm because Granny Smith and Apple Bloom are too old and young, respectively. Farm work includes breaking apple trees, moving bales of hay, plowing the land, pulling loaded wagons, and making their famous apple cider.
Repair
Apple Bloom asks Big Mac in "Hearts and Hooves Day" to come and fix a gazebo, hoping to arrange a romantic picnic for him and Cheerilee. He arrives with a toolbox, but doesn't get a chance to work on the gazebo because there's nothing wrong with it. Big Mac helps Pinkie Pie fix the bridge in "It's About Time" as they work together to tighten the nuts along the bridge's supports. He also reinstalls the dessert car side panel on the train to Canterlot in "MMMystery on the Friendship Express," as it was necessary to remove the side panel to get the Mascarpone Meringue Madness marzipan cake on board. In "Hard to Say Anything," Big Mac makes a larger display case for Sugar Belle.

After a conversation with Starlight Glimmer, he gracefully withdraws from the race. In "Growing Up Is Hard to Do," Big Mac isn't feeling well, prompting Applejack to join the Cutie Mark Crusaders at the Appleloosa County Fair.
In "The Big Mac Question," Big Mac plans an elaborate surprise proposal to Sugar Belle, but Spike, Discord, the Cutie Mark Crusaders, and Mrs. Cake all try to help but interfere. Ultimately, Big Mac and Sugar Belle get engaged and married at the end of the episode.
In "The Ending of the End - Part 2," Big Mac, along with his family and Sugar Belle, reunites with the other Earth ponies in Ponyville to confront Mayor Marley about the apparent battle between Earth ponies, unicorns, and Pegasi. After the Young Six reassure everyone in Equestria that their friendships matter, Big Mac joins the final battle against Queen Chrysalis, Lord Tirek, and Cozy Glow. In "The Last Problem," he appears in flashbacks trying to help Applejack transport goods to Canterlot for Twilight's coronation. However, he accidentally gives the wrong kinds of apple products to each caterer, much to his embarrassment when he attends the coronation with his family and Sugar Belle. At the end of the episode, set in the future, it is revealed that he had a child with Sugar Belle. Big Mac also appears alongside Sugar Belle in the group shot of Applejack during "The Magic of Friendship Grows."

He makes another brief appearance in "Magical Mystery Cure," pulling Applejack in a cart as she plants some seeds.
history:
He works alongside his family producing cider at The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000. During cider sales, he carries the heavy barrels to the stand and connects them to the tap so Apple Bloom can dispense the cider. He dismisses Flim and Flam's unfair business proposition by banging his hoof on the ground and saying, "No deal!" In the cider-making competition, he runs on a treadmill to press the apples into the cider, later with the help of Rainbow Dash.
Big McIntosh plays a significant role in "Hearts and Hooves Day." Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo attempt to concoct a love potion to make Big McIntosh fall for their teacher, Cheerilee. However, they accidentally make love with poison, which has overpowering effects. The poison eventually wears off, and Big McIntosh and Cheerilee are drawn to each other to deceive the Cutie Mark Crusaders. He appears briefly during the smile song in A Friend in Deed, giving Pinkie Pie and two fillies a ride in his hay wagon.
In "It's About Time," Big McIntosh helps Pinkie Pie "disaster-proof" on a bridge by suspending her with a rope in his mouth. When Twilight comes to inspect his work, he says "eeyup," accidentally dropping the rope.
She makes a brief appearance in one of the Foal Free Press prints in Ponyville's Fourth Estate, hiding the Smarty Pants doll she recognized in Lesson Zero, before appearing with Applejack later in the episode. The two engage in a character swap in the latter: Applejack speaks to Big McIntosh's general "eeyup" and "nope," while Big Mac scolds Apple Bloom and her friends for the trouble they caused.
history:
Second Season
His first appearance in the second season is in The Return of Harmony, Part 2. After Discord takes over Ponyville, Big McIntosh behaves like a dog, digging in the ground and panting.
In the remastered opening sequence, which first appeared in "Lesson Zero," Big McIntosh replaces "Creme Brulee" pulling a cart. Big McIntosh appears in the episode itself when Twilight Sparkle crashes into him after trying to break up a fight that started between the Cutie Mark Crusaders. He retrieves Smarty Pants from the fillies, but then falls in love with it himself and runs away with it. The spell attracts dozens of ponies, and they fight over the doll until Princess Celestia intervenes and breaks the spell. Once the commotion has subsided, Big McIntosh checks if the shoreline is clear and runs off with it again, whinniing with joy.
At the beginning of Luna Eclipsed, he is pulling several ponies in a cart. He is dressed in his Nightmare Night costume; that is, a black top hat and a cape with a white apple in the shape of a skull.
In "The Sisterhood and the Hooves," he helps Granny Smith as the race announcer by whispering the correct words in her ear when she makes a mistake. In "The Cutie Pox," he's inside Sweet Apple Acres during the discussion about Apple Bloom's cutie marks. He cures Granny Smith's sudden change in horse Charley with a gentle tap on the hip. However, don't comment on his sister's new cutie marks; just smile and repeat Applejack's cheerful exclamations with a "Yippee" or "Nooo."
On Family Appreciation Day, he prepares for the zap apple harvest with Applejack. He says a partial prayer at the beginning of the episode when he, Applejack, and Apple Bloom cheer in unison that the zap apples are coming in.
history and appearances:
History and Appearances
Season One
Big McIntosh first appears walking through town when Twilight lands in Ponyville in episode one. Later, he makes a brief appearance at Apple's family reunion, holding a small green apple cupcake. Although he is mentioned by name and referenced in subsequent episodes, he doesn't speak until the Applebuck season.
Before the events of Applebuck Season, Big McIntosh was injured and unable to pick apples with Applejack. In Winter Wrap Up, Big McIntosh and other Earth ponies clear snow from the fields around Ponyville. He also tells Applejack that Caramel lost the grass seeds. In Fall Weather Friends, Big McIntosh, Granny Smith, and Apple Bloom cheer on Applejack during the Iron Pony competition. Applejack's flashback in The Cutie Mark Chronicles shows Big McIntosh as a shorter, thinner young pony, anxiously watching her leave the farm to find her destiny. He is loved again when Applejack returns to the farm.
personality:
The episode "The Fourth Estate of Ponyville" makes reference to his affection for the doll; a newspaper edition titled "Big McIntosh: What Is He Hiding?" features a picture of him playing alone with the doll.
Although he generally speaks few words, as mentioned earlier, Big Mac demonstrates a more articulate vocabulary while in disguise in "The Brotherhood of Hooves," speaking much more eloquently than usual. He is also portrayed as very talkative and sarcastic as a teenage colt in "Where the Apple Lies," though he is not a good listener. By the end of the episode, he learns to "talk less and listen more."
personality:
Representation in the series
Personality
Big McIntosh is quite calm and easygoing in contrast to his sister, Applejack. He's a pony of few words and, like the rest of his family, speaks with a Missouri Ozark-like accent. He tends to answer questions or reaffirm things with a brooding "eeeyup" or "nnope." He's hard to rile up, though he does scold the Cutie Mark Crusaders for posting damaging gossip about him and Applejack in "The Fourth Estate of Ponyville," readily agrees with Cheerilee disciplining the scheming Crusaders in "Hearts and Hooves Day," and gets annoyed by Applejack's constant questions in "Pinkie Apple Pie." He does possess a kind of practical wisdom; for example, he advises Applejack not to pick all the apples during Applebuck season.
Big Mac has a close bond with his sisters and cherishes his relationship with them. In "The Last Roundup," he cries when he learns that Applejack has decided not to return to Ponyville. In "The Sisterhood of Hooves," he goes to great lengths to earn Apple Bloom a blue ribbon in the Sisterhood of Hooves, and it's stated that the two were quite close when they were younger. In the same episode, he is shown to harbor feelings of inferiority and neglect whenever Apple Bloom praises Applejack for her heroic deeds, and he feels envious when Apple Bloom starts spending more time with her for this reason. In "Crusaders of the Lost Mark," he sheds tears of joy and pride after Apple Bloom earns her Cutie Mark.
He's hilariously involved in the "I want it, I need it" spell fiasco in Lesson Zero, falling in love with and refusing to give up Twilight's enchanted, ragged Smarty Pants doll. Many other Ponyville citizens also fall prey to the spell and the pile of Big Mac dogs, but he blows them all away in a cartoonish explosion. Even after the spell is lifted from the doll, he still manages to run off with it.
