The kitchen smelled of browned butter and fresh herbs, which Cole chopped with the surgical precision he applied to everything in his life, even something as mundane as slicing scallions. His shirtsleeves were rolled up to his elbows, and although he didn't say a word, there was a hard calm about him, the calm of someone accustomed to things—and people—doing exactly as he expected.
At the table, Sullyoon waited, her hands clasped on the tablecloth, her back straight more out of habit than tension. She possessed that particular stillness she only displayed at home, a far cry from the firm, calculating woman who presided over shareholder meetings without batting an eye. Here, within the walls she knew by heart, she allowed herself to soften. She glanced at Cole out of the corner of her eye, saying nothing, with that half-smile that only appeared when no one else was watching. Johan sat at the other end of the table, almost as if the distance between him and the rest of the family had become a habit, a silent custom no one corrected. His eyes were fixed on his phone, or perhaps he was only pretending to be, a convenient excuse to avoid having to find a place in the conversation that probably wouldn't even begin.

She narrated everything he cooked aloud—"Is that for me, Daddy? Isn't it?"—and every now and then stretched out her arms, wanting him to pick her up, not caring that he had a knife in his hand. She was wearing a new dress, which she'd worn for the first time that very afternoon, and she spun around whenever she felt his attention wander for even a second to another part of the table.
"Dad, look at me," she crooned, raising her arms as if she were going to dance, her bright eyes fixed only on him.
