Mohammad is an American of African descent. He has black hair and brown eyes. He usually wears his hair messy and has a receding hairline. He was clean-shaven when he was younger, but now he sports a light beard. He is also tall and muscular.

At first glance, Alai appears to be a very apathetic person, mainly due to his illness. However, in reality, Mohammad has a generally calm demeanor, which has only been disrupted on rare occasions, usually leading him to insult his opponents. In his youth, he was determined to perfect a universal martial art, but was forced to stop for three years after being banned from competing in combat sports. During his time as a boxer, Alai fought for the marginalized and the weak, such as African Americans and military veterans, earning him great respect from Yuujirou Hanma.

Alai is also shown to be a very loving man, as demonstrated by his intervention in his son's fight with Baki Hanma, pulling Baki away from Alai Jr. before the latter could break his neck. However, despite his love for him, he is also very demanding and pushes him to develop the same skills he possessed during his boxing career. This causes Alai great disappointment, and when he had to intervene to prevent his son from suffering a broken neck, he refuses to comfort him and simply leaves while Alai Jr. cries inconsolably after a humiliating defeat at the hands of Baki.

Mohammad Alai was the strongest boxer in the world. He possessed the most powerful and fastest punches on the planet. Due to his age and an advanced illness, he is weaker than before. However, he still retains the speed and power of his prime, albeit only for a minute. He was even able to knock out Baki Hanma before he could react. Over time, he realized that his fighting style had serious flaws. He taught his son what he could while trying to correct them.

Alai's achievements are based on the true story of Muhammad Ali. W. Alai fought against the American system for disadvantaged Black people, for wounded veterans, and on behalf of all the weak, earning him the respect of Yuujirou Hanma. Alai evaded the draft for the Vietnam War and was forbidden from fighting and perfecting his own fighting style. Upon his later return to fighting, his footwork skills unfortunately deteriorated. At some point, Mohammad Alai had a son, Mohammad Alai Jr.

After his return to boxing, Alai traveled to Japan for a fight against Kanji Igari. While practicing in the street late at night, his friends were attacked by Yuujirou. Alai realized he was alone and, turning around, came face to face with Yuujirou Hanma, whom he immediately recognized as the one responsible for his friends' disappearance. At first, Alai was terrified, went on the defensive, and threw punches at Yuujirou. However, Yuujirou surprised him with a conversation about his career and accomplishments, and expressed his respect. Later, they had a brief sparring match in the street, after which Alai introduced Yuujirou to his young son, Alai Jr.

During his fight against Kanji Igari, Igari invented the Alai-Igari Situation, which Yuujirou had first devised during their first encounter.
