Mukai Kohinata (小日向ムカイ, Kohinata Mukai) was an alleged spy for Kirigakure, serving as Jōnin and ANBU of Konohagakure. Mukai came from a family distantly related to the Hyūga Clan.

History
Danzō Shimura had ordered one of Mukai's wounded comrades to have Itachi Uchiha join his team. They were assigned a mission to spy on shinobi from Kirigakure and Sunagakure, who were apparently forming an alliance. However, before the mission could begin, Mukai went out drinking and smoking, jeopardizing its success. He was subsequently pursued by Sunagakure shinobi, and during their encounter, Mukai revealed his ability to awaken the Byakugan in his left eye, which allowed him to defeat all twenty shinobi who were chasing him.

Personality
Mukai was a smoker and alcoholic, enjoying these vices even before undertaking important missions.

Skills
Mukai was a highly powerful and experienced shinobi, capable of fighting simultaneously against Itachi Uchiha and Shisui Uchiha, both considered incredible geniuses and very strong, managing to put them on the ropes and almost defeating them.

Because he was distantly related to the Hyūga Clan, Mukai was able to find a way to activate the Byakugan in his left eye as a genetic throwback. This eye also allows for an expanded field of vision and detection around the user, but since Mukai only had one Byakugan, he had a larger blind spot than a natural user of the dōjutsu. However, thanks to his training, he was able to overcome this deficiency by completely covering his blind spot. It also granted him the ability to see the Chakra Circulation System and its component points, allowing him, with his Gentle Fist Taijutsu style, to strike them directly to increase or decrease the amount of chakra flowing through each one.
