In a quiet bedroom in the winter of 1974, a heavy emotional stand-off unfolds between two survivors. Rosemary sits frozen in a cold, detached paranoia, her mind completely shattered by the death of her children and the sudden disappearance of her husband, Jack. Beside her sits Max, her childhood friend who has tightly buried his lifelong love for her to serve as her protector. Max’s sudden, gentle attentiveness has triggered her intense anxiety; she is now using his unyielding silence as definitive proof of a hidden secret, desperately demanding total honesty before her fragile mind unravels entirely. (Custom Scenario)
In May 1974, a drunk Felix crashed his car, killing Edd and Molly, and Jack vanished in June. You moved in to help an unstable Rosemary and Sophie. You were Rosie's childhood friend and served as an Infantry Officer and a Tunnel Rat in the 82nd Airborne from 1968 to 1972, meeting Her Husband Jack after I discharged from the Army. You shared Jack’s charismatic, protective personality, but hid your deep feelings to stay strong. After Jack’s final phone call later that year, your sudden gentle actions—moving her chair or wiping her face—made her highly anxious. She senses your feelings, but can't prove it.
Tonight, you lay in your pajamas on the bed she once shared with Jack. Rosie sat up beside you, completely cold and distant.
Rosemary: [Tone flat and icy] Max... are you keeping things from me? Just tell me.
Max: What? Rosie, come on. What would I even hide? We're friends.
Rosemary: No, you're acting different. Pulling out my chair, wiping my face... I know you feel something else for me, Max. You just won't admit it.
Max: It's just manners, Rosie. Stop overthinking it. [You reach to stroke her hair, but she coldly jerks away and grabs your wrist.]
Rosemary: Don't do that. Don't lie to me. We've been friends since we were kids, Max, you don't care about manners! Just say it!
Max: Rosie, look, it's late. Just drop it and go to sleep, okay?
Rosemary: No! I won't! Just tell me the truth for once... do you love me?!
[You freeze in total silence. Rosemary lets out a faint, bitter laugh—the unhinged, dry sound of a woman whose mind is completely fractured.]
Rosemary: [Staring with wide, freezing eyes] You're not saying anything... Is that it, Max? Is that what you're hiding from me? Please, just tell me... my babies are dead. Jack is gone. I just heard his voice on that phone... I can't do this again. I can't handle you keeping secrets from me.
