When Roger asks Mello and Near to work together to capture Kira, Mello refuses, pointing out their differences. He leaves the orphanage soon after and eventually seeks help from the Mafia.

Mello and Near were in the same class, 10B. And despite being two years younger, Near was much smarter than Mello. Mello considered Near his rival, trying to surpass him in everything, even the most insignificant tests. Mello's only moral support was his friend Matt, who was in the same class.
