Shousuke Komi

Appearance

Shousuke is Shouko’s younger brother and has a strikingly similar appearance to his father and sister.

He has dark hair, dark eyes, a tall physique, and a handsome face.

Unlike Shouko’s extremely long hair, Shousuke has a short masculine hairstyle.

His appearance makes him extremely popular with girls, but he generally has little interest in their attention.

Personality

Shousuke is extremely introverted, quiet, antisocial, and independent.

However, there is a very important distinction between him and Shouko:

Shousuke is capable of speaking perfectly well. He simply doesn’t want to.

He dislikes unnecessary interaction and prefers being alone.

He doesn’t necessarily fear people in the same way Shouko does. Instead, socializing often feels like an inconvenience to him.

Despite his antisocial nature, he is genuinely kind underneath the quiet exterior.

Background

Shousuke attends Kisai High School later in the story.

He was apparently a much happier and more cheerful child when he was younger. His personality gradually became more withdrawn as he grew older.

One particularly interesting interpretation of his character is that his current personality may partly be connected to his relationship with Shouko.

He saw his sister struggling with loneliness and, in some ways, adopted a similarly quiet personality. This idea becomes an important part of understanding why Shousuke became the way he is.

Shousuke and Shouko have an unusual sibling relationship because neither of them is particularly talkative.

However, they understand each other extremely well.

Shousuke knows what it is like to live in a family where everyone communicates through expressions, gestures, and silence.

Masayoshi Komi

Masayoshi is a tall, mature-looking man with dark hair and glasses.

He has the same quiet, stoic visual presence as his children.

Personality

Masayoshi is extremely quiet.

In fact, he communicates so little verbally that he can have entire conversations with Shouko without either of them speaking.

Like Shouko, he struggles with communication and social situations.

Despite his intimidating appearance, Masayoshi is kind, affectionate, supportive, and extremely devoted to his family.

He tends to express love through actions rather than words.

He is also surprisingly talented. He can cook, build things, ride motorcycles, and perform various practical skills.

One of his more unexpected interests is sea life. He becomes surprisingly enthusiastic when talking about aquatic animals.

Background

Masayoshi met Shuuko while they were both seventeen.

He was already quiet and talented as a teenager. Shuuko initially found him strange, but gradually became attracted to his kindness and abilities.

He eventually became her husband and the father of Shouko and Shousuke.

Relationship with Shouko

Masayoshi understands Shouko perhaps better than almost anyone.

Because they share similar difficulties with communication, they can understand one another without saying much.

Their relationship is one of the funniest and sweetest examples of how silence doesn’t necessarily mean a lack of communication in the series.

Shuuko Komi

Appearance

Shuuko looks remarkably similar to her daughter.

She has dark hair, purple eyes, and facial features strongly resembling Shouko’s, to the point that people can mistake her for Shouko’s older sister.

The major difference is her hairstyle: Shuuko’s hair is much shorter, reaching around her neck rather than extending down her back.

She almost always wears a cheerful smile, making her look dramatically more approachable than the rest of the Komi family.

Personality

Shuuko is the complete opposite of Shouko.

She is extremely outgoing, energetic, talkative, playful, affectionate, and confident.

Where Shouko can barely speak to strangers, Shuuko can seemingly talk endlessly.

She jokingly describes herself as an “eternal 17-year-old”, despite being an adult mother.

She loves romance, enjoys teasing her family, and is often amused by the relationship between Shouko and Tadano.

Background

Shuuko met Masayoshi when they were both teenagers.

Her own childhood was difficult. Her parents died when she was young, and she was raised by her grandmother. Her personality during her youth was considerably more rebellious and delinquent-like than her current personality.

Masayoshi gradually won her affection through his kindness, skills, and reliability.

After her grandmother died, Masayoshi promised that Shuuko would never have to be alone.

They eventually married and had Shouko and Shousuke.

Relationship with Shouko

Shuuko loves her daughter enormously.

She understands that Shouko is quiet and socially anxious, but unlike most people, she isn’t intimidated by Shouko’s silence.

She is also extremely supportive of Tadano once she realizes how important he is to Shouko.

Omoharu Nakanaka

Appearance

Nakanaka has a very distinctive appearance.

She usually wears an eyepatch over one eye, claims that it contains a mysterious supernatural power called her “Dragon Force,” and often wraps one of her arms in bandages.

Her clothing style is darker and somewhat gothic/rock-inspired. She sometimes wears her school jacket over her shoulders like a cape and uses a fingerless glove.

Outside school, her interests are reflected in her room and clothing, which are filled with anime, manga, games, and other otaku-related interests.

Personality

Nakanaka is a classic chūnibyō.

She genuinely believes—or at least enjoys pretending—that she possesses supernatural powers and is the reincarnation of a powerful warrior from another world.

She speaks dramatically, gives people elaborate titles, and turns ordinary situations into fantasy adventures.

Despite this ridiculous behavior, Nakanaka is actually lonely, sensitive, shy, and socially awkward.

Before meeting Komi, she had very few genuine friends. Her fantasy world was partly a way of dealing with her loneliness.

Background

Nakanaka had struggled socially for years before meeting Komi.

She becomes interested in Komi and begins referring to her as “Princess Komilia”, imagining that they have some connection from a previous life.

Komi eventually realizes that Nakanaka isn’t simply being strange—she is lonely.

Rather than mocking her, Komi accepts her.

That acceptance becomes extremely meaningful to Nakanaka.

Relationship with Komi

Nakanaka is important to Komi because she shows how accepting someone can make an enormous difference.

Komi doesn’t demand that Nakanaka abandon her unusual personality. She simply accepts her as she is.

That makes their friendship particularly fitting for Komi’s overall journey.

Himiko Agari

Appearance

Himiko Agari is a shorter girl with a shy, timid appearance. She wears glasses and generally has a nervous expression.

She has a noticeably curvier figure, something she is personally insecure about because of negative experiences during middle school.

She is approximately 156 cm tall.

Personality

Agari is extremely nervous, insecure, apologetic, and self-conscious.

She has difficulty functioning when she feels that people are watching her and can become overwhelmed by even simple social interactions.

Interestingly, however, food completely changes her personality.

Agari is an enormous food enthusiast and becomes surprisingly confident and knowledgeable whenever the subject is food, especially ramen.

She secretly works as a highly successful food reviewer under the name “Ramen is My Staple.” Her reviews can apparently cause restaurants to become extremely popular.

She is also very loyal to Komi and, because of her extremely low self-confidence, initially sees Komi as someone almost impossibly superior to herself.

Background

Agari is one of Komi’s earliest friends and is introduced during Komi’s first year.

Najimi identifies her as someone who might be compatible with Komi because both girls struggle with social interaction.

Eventually, Agari becomes comfortable enough to regard herself as a genuine friend rather than simply someone standing beneath Komi.

Relationship with Komi

Agari is important because she demonstrates that Komi isn’t the only person struggling with social anxiety.

Their friendship gives Komi another person who understands what it feels like to be terrified of social situations.

Makoto Katai

Appearance

Makoto Katai is a very tall, muscular, physically intimidating boy.

He has blond/dyed hair, a stern expression, and a powerful physique. His appearance makes him look like a stereotypical delinquent even though he is actually extremely gentle.

His deep voice and intimidating facial expression make the misunderstanding even worse.

Personality

Katai is actually shy, timid, kind-hearted, and extremely nervous around people.

His biggest problem is similar to Komi’s: he doesn’t know how to communicate naturally.

The difference is that people react to Katai’s anxiety by being afraid of him because he looks intimidating.

Katai desperately wants to make friends but frequently doesn’t know how to behave around them. When Tadano treats him normally instead of being frightened, Katai becomes extremely grateful.

He eventually develops a very strong admiration for Tadano.

Background

Katai missed the beginning of high school because he became sick. After missing the first week, his anxiety became so bad that he struggled to return.

To make himself look stronger and prevent people from bullying him, he dyed his hair and trained his body, unintentionally making himself look even more frightening.

His family runs a martial-arts dojo, and many members of his family have similarly intimidating appearances despite being kind people.

Relationship with Komi

Katai initially finds Komi terrifying because of her intense stare.

Ironically, Komi is also frightened of him.

Katai eventually interprets Komi as a kind of “communication master” and looks up to her as someone who can teach him how to communicate.

His relationship with Komi is therefore another humorous example of two people who look intimidating but are actually extremely shy.

Kaede Otori

Appearance

Kaede Otori has long hair divided into several tied sections, giving her hairstyle a distinctive appearance. A small ahoge, or stray strand of hair, sticks upward from the top of her head.

Her eyes are usually drawn as thin lines, and she almost constantly wears a gentle smile.

Her overall appearance is soft and relaxed rather than intimidating or dramatic.

Personality

Otori is one of the most laid-back and slow-moving characters in the entire series.

She speaks slowly, walks slowly, reacts slowly, answers questions after long pauses, and can even take so long to complete ordinary activities that everyone else has already moved on.

However, her slowness isn’t necessarily a weakness.

In fact, it makes her surprisingly compatible with Komi because Otori naturally gives Komi the time she needs to communicate.

Otori is also gentle and kind. She can appear absent-minded, but she sometimes notices when somebody is being excluded and quietly makes an effort to include them.

She also has a strange habit of wandering away and disappearing, sometimes ending up in completely unexpected places.

Otori comes from an extremely wealthy family. Her home is so enormous that it resembles a European-style mansion or castle, and she can apparently get lost inside it.

Despite being wealthy, Otori doesn’t behave arrogantly. She is gentle and easygoing with practically everyone.

Otori becomes friends with Komi and Onemine during preparations for the school cultural festival.

Her calm personality makes her one of the easiest people for Komi to communicate with.

Relationship with Tadano and Manbagi

Onemine is also one of the first people to notice the romantic connection between Komi and Tadano.

She can recognize their feelings even when neither of them is willing to openly admit them.

Later, she also understands the complicated situation involving Komi, Tadano, and Manbagi.

Rather than interfering, Onemine generally watches from the sidelines and supports her friends.

Importance to Komi

Manbagi is important to Komi because she becomes more than just another person on her list of 100 friends.

Manbagi also gives Komi the opportunity to support someone else. Instead of always being the person who needs help communicating, Komi gradually becomes someone who can recognize another person’s pain and actively help them.

Rumiko Manbagi is a Japanese high-school girl who becomes one of Shouko Komi’s closest friends after joining her class during their second year of high school. She initially has a very distinctive gyaru appearance. Her most noticeable feature is her heavy ganguro-style makeup, which includes darkened skin, strong eye makeup, and pronounced lipstick. Najimi is extremely important to Komi’s development because they help expose her to a huge number of different social situations.

Najimi can be overwhelming for Komi because of their incredible energy and willingness to do almost anything. However, this also gives Komi opportunities to practice communicating with someone who is extremely accepting and socially experienced.

Najimi is essentially the complete opposite of Komi when it comes to communication.

Where Komi struggles to speak to people, Najimi can seemingly become friends with almost anyone within minutes. They are extremely outgoing, energetic, talkative, playful, mischievous, and socially confident.

Najimi claims to be the childhood friend of practically everyone, and remarkably, this often turns out to be true. Their enormous social network makes them one of the most connected students at Itan Private High School.

They can walk into almost any group and immediately fit in. They understand jokes, social situations, personalities, and people’s reactions extremely quickly. This makes Najimi an important social bridge between Komi and the rest of the school.

However, Najimi isn’t simply a perfect, endlessly kind social butterfly. They have a chaotic and mischievous side. They enjoy teasing people, creating trouble, organizing ridiculous situations, and sometimes taking advantage of their friends’ kindness.

Najimi can also be motivated by selfish interests, such as money, food, entertainment, or simply wanting something fun to happen. Despite this, they genuinely care about their friends and can be very supportive when it matters.

Their enormous confidence means that they can sometimes fail to understand just how difficult ordinary social interaction is for someone like Komi. Things that feel completely effortless to Najimi can be terrifying for Komi.

Najimi Osana is one of the most recognizable and unusual characters in Komi Can’t Communicate. Najimi is deliberately designed with an androgynous appearance, and their gender is intentionally left ambiguous throughout the series. Najimi is very short and petite, standing at approximately 149.86 cm (4’11”) and weighing around 42.2 kg (93 lbs) according to later manga information. They have a small, youthful-looking body and are considerably shorter than Komi and Tadano. (Komi-san Fandom⁠)

Their hair is short, wavy lavender-colored hair. It sticks outward around the sides of their head and has distinctive upward-pointing sections on top, giving their hairstyle an energetic and slightly mischievous appearance.

Najimi has a youthful face with large, expressive eyes and soft facial features. Their appearance is deliberately difficult to categorize as distinctly masculine or feminine, which fits the character’s intentionally ambiguous presentation.

At Itan Private High School, Najimi normally wears the girls’ school uniform, including the skirt, but combines it with a boy’s necktie rather than the usual feminine ribbon. This mixture of masculine and feminine clothing is another deliberate part of their design.

Tadano’s past explains why he became so determined to be “ordinary.” During his second year of middle school, he went through a chūnibyō phase, during which he tried very hard to appear mysterious, special, and cool. He adopted an exaggerated personality and behaved as though he were some kind of exceptional protagonist.

Eventually, Tadano confessed his feelings to a girl named Kawai. She rejected him, and the experience became extremely embarrassing for him. Afterward, he decided that he never wanted to stand out like that again. He changed his appearance and personality and deliberately tried to become as average and inconspicuous as possible. When Tadano enters Itan Private High School, he intends to maintain this ordinary lifestyle. However, his plan immediately falls apart when he meets Komi.

On his first day, Tadano initially thinks Komi is simply a beautiful and intimidating girl who doesn’t want to talk to him. But after observing her more carefully, he realizes that she is actually struggling tremendously to communicate.

Rather than walking away, Tadano decides to help her.

He becomes Komi’s very first friend and promises to help her accomplish her dream of making 100 friends. This makes him the person who essentially starts Komi’s entire journey toward overcoming her communication difficulties. Personality

Tadano is quiet, considerate, polite, cautious, and extremely observant. Unlike many of the eccentric students surrounding him, he generally tries to avoid unnecessary drama. His main goal when entering high school is actually to become as ordinary and unnoticeable as possible.

His greatest ability is not physical strength or exceptional intelligence—it is his remarkable ability to read the atmosphere and understand other people’s emotions. He pays close attention to people’s expressions, body language, tone of voice, and behavior. Because of this, he can often figure out what someone is feeling even when they don’t directly tell him.

This ability is what allows him to understand Komi. When almost everyone else interprets Komi’s silence and intimidating expression as arrogance or hostility, Tadano realizes that something is wrong. He recognizes that she isn’t ignoring people because she dislikes them; instead, she is desperately nervous and doesn’t know how to communicate.

Tadano is also extremely empathetic. He doesn’t make Komi feel ashamed about her communication difficulties. Instead, he patiently gives her opportunities to communicate at her own pace. When she cannot say something herself, he tries to understand what she means without speaking over her or making decisions for her.
