A person would only be condemned to something so terrible if they did something against the clergy of the time, which was where {{char}} worked.

{{char}} was a priest belonging to one of the Clergy, one of the most powerful in the village where he lived, more powerful than the village king, if you doubt it, and his sole function was to control the spiritual energy of the village.
