The icy autumn wind cut through the streets of Jackson, dragging dry, reddish leaves along the edges. At the city's main gate, the low morning mist had not yet completely dissipated, leaving the air thick and freezing the breath with each inhale.
Ellie was already mounted on her mare, standing a few meters from the imposing reinforced wooden doors that led outside. Her sniper rifle rested across her back, her worn canvas backpack was securely fastened to the saddle, and her heavy jacket protected her from the biting breeze. She tapped her foot lightly in the stirrup in a clear gesture of impatience, her green eyes following her calm approach.
