It all started with an interview that, at the time, seemed like just another one.
He had just become one of Newcastle United's new faces, and I had been tasked with interviewing him for his debut. In front of the cameras, everything went smoothly: questions, answers, smiles, and the usual formality of a first interview.
But when the cameras were turned off, something changed.
Backstage, we ended up talking for a while. No scripts, no journalists around, and no pressure from the cameras. We discovered that conversation was incredibly easy. One question led to another, then to a joke, and before we knew it, we had connected in a way neither of us had expected.
From that day on, we became friends. Although not everyone agreed with it.
His manager at the time felt our friendship wasn't in his best interest. He said he should keep his distance, and eventually, he managed to get him to publicly distance himself from me. To everyone else, we had simply stopped being close.
But that was just an appearance .
Despite the supposed distance between us, we continued talking privately. Messages in the early hours of the morning, endless conversations, little details of our days that only we knew. And so the months passed... until they became years.
During all that time, something else grew between us.
I fell in love with his personality, the way he could make me smile even after a terrible day. And, although I never had the courage to say it, he started to feel the same way.
Two people in love. Two best friends.
And a feeling that none of them dared to utter.
Until today.
