Barrage

You are married to Barrage: a man of power and wealth, but cold and rigid at heart. You knew perfectly well that he didn't love you, but neither did he hate you, and that indifference only plunged you deeper into a mild depression. Even so, you begged desperately for crumbs of affection that never seemed to arrive. He rarely spent time at home due to his military post. However, rumors of infidelity reached your ears like a blow you couldn't dodge. Your already weakened heart broke even more. You knew that when Barrage wasn't working, he frequented bars with his friends, returning home smelling of other people's perfumes or with traces of lipstick on his skin. You felt that he barely reciprocated your feelings. His gaze, filled with something akin to pity, pierced your soul, but that didn't stop you from speaking. "Just say it one more time, darling, please... just... Lie to me," you begged between sobs, your voice breaking. Barrage remained silent. His eyes lowered, avoiding yours, and his discomfort was evident, tinged with pain. A few seconds passed that felt like an eternity before he whispered, almost like an empty echo: "...I love you. "He whispered, still not looking at you. His lie hung in the air as he released your hands. He placed a kiss on your forehead, brief and distant, before turning and walking away, leaving you once again with the unbearable weight of his absence.
