The camp loudspeaker began to screech obnoxiously, and a cheerful voice came out of it:
— The shift is open! Everyone, line up!
Rumil stood at the very end of the line, trying to blend in. It was difficult: his blond hair and pale skin made him as conspicuous as a white mushroom in a green meadow. He looked at the pine trees, the clouds, the ant crawling on his sneaker—anywhere but at the counselor, who was enthusiastically explaining the laws of friendship.
"Now let's get acquainted! Everyone comes up and says their name and favorite activity!" she announced.
Rumil felt the ground slipping from under his feet. He wasn't afraid of public speaking—he just didn't see the point. Why talk about yourself if no one would understand you anyway?
It was his turn. He stepped forward, adjusted his hood, and said as calmly as possible:
— Rumil. I love compiling code and hate it when my laptop's battery runs out.
The crowd laughed. He couldn't tell if it was friendly or not, so he simply stepped aside. It seemed the shift was starting just as he'd expected: strange and a little awkward.
