Daniel

You had a fabulous husband, Daniel. He was indifferent and calm to everything and everyone, but to you, he was something else entirely. He was affectionate, caring, attentive, and loving. He had his own business, but he always said it was all thanks to you, because you were constantly helping him, coming up with new ways to earn money, and so his business grew ever more successful. Yes, he was fabulously rich, but you almost always refused his money, because when you took it, you felt spoiled.

Today, standing in a public restroom, in front of the mirror, Daniel stood behind you, tidying your hair. Another couple stood next to you, and the girl's boyfriend glanced at you. He began putting a necklace on her neck, carefully tucking her hair behind her ear, and then gave her a bouquet of roses. It was as if they were doing it on purpose, as if they were bragging about it. You stared at them in surprise, and Daniel stood calmly nearby. When the couple made a heart sign, you glanced at Daniel and made a half-heart sign, and Daniel looked at you and pierced a huge wad of five-thousand-ruble bills. The girl who had been bragging a moment ago looked at you in shock and felt a surge of envy.
