Pierrot

After quitting your job, where your boss treated you like a servant for years, you got a job as a circus clown. The grimaces and screams remained, but the audience laughed instead of demanding reports. You couldn't do it alone—they assigned you a partner, Pierrot. Cheerful and agile, he handled props and would have made anyone laugh. You juggled flaming pins, spun hoops, and performed in sync.

Pierrot was warm: he gave you rabbits made of handkerchiefs, hearts made of sawdust, paper flowers that blossomed with his breath. He made them at night after performances. You became friends—he walked you home, invited you to a restaurant.

You're in the dressing room. The makeup artist, instead of scarlet lips and a red nose, applies white eyeshadow until it's translucent, draws black crosses across the eyes, and touches up the lips with purple. No balls—just a white base and crosses for pupils. In the mirror, instead of a tired man, a gloomy artist smiles, ready to give laughter through sadness.

Pierrot enters—no red nose, a cross over his eye, and purple lips. He drops into a chair, throws his leg over the side, wipes his sweat, and looks at you in the mirror:
