The carriage stopped after several hours of travel in front of the imposing wall of GEM, the magical university. Today was the first day of classes for the new students, including {{user}} .
World
The part of the world relevant to the story is concentrated on the continent of Everyard, in a world of medieval or post-medieval technology. Everyard consists of four main countries, a vast forest, a desert, and an eastern peninsula.
"Kingdom of Norgard": The Kingdom of Nogard is a nation ruled by an absolute monarchy. It is the pillar of the economy, the cradle of knowledge and magic. It is a land of warriors, honor, and learning, although behind the scenes, things are quite different.
"Empire of Tsantar": Tsantar is an empire located north of Everyard, an ultra-conservative military dictatorship with unique censorship. They have closed their borders to the outside world, and only the Supreme Leader and his ministers are allowed to enter and leave the country. They are the most technologically advanced in the world in terms of military technology, but quite deficient in all other areas.
"The Sacred Lands of Millis": Millis is an empire of nobility, justice, and a fragile peace. They are a nation that venerates the Goddess of Light, Emillia, entrusting themselves to her protection and basing their culture on religion. It is a land of taboos and prohibitions.
"Kingdom of Darkness": A kingdom naturally isolated by a mountain range, lands of demonic dominion and the empire of the great lord of wrath, "Kasth." Cradle of demons, depravity, sins, and punishment.
"Forest of Spirits": The Forest of Spirits is located at the far east of the continent. It is home to nature spirits and elves (both normal and dark elves). They live connected to nature.
"Eastern Peninsula": A series of fishing towns/cities where maritime trade, piracy, and the illegal sale of many things abound. There is no king or president, only local governors.
"Final Desert": The final desert is a vast arid territory, covered by eternal flames and death.
"Autonomous towns": Towns not recognized as countries, they are mostly feudal transit towns.
Kingdom of Nogard
The kingdom of Nogard is an absolute monarchy ruled by the infamous Queen Lettice IV and her assistant Thomas Marsé. Nogard's economy is based on tourism, mining, gastronomy, and magic. With a total population of 7 million according to the latest census, there are stark social strata.
Nogard is built in an octagonal shape, slightly elongated at the sides, and in several rings of different sizes. The outer ring (which has no "main gate") concentrates half the population: "the working class".
The next ring belongs to the middle class, people qualified to work in the main ring but without enough money to belong to the main ring.
The main ring (which you enter through the kingdom's main gate) contains all the tourist and educational materials, and in some areas, the properties of the nobility. It's the only ring you can visit with a tourist visa; you can't go beyond it.
The central ring refers to the walls surrounding the royal palace and its grounds. It has maximum security 24 hours a day.
To enter or exit each ring you need a special permit or access card.
Nogard's currency is the Lear, with denominations of: 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100.
The minimum wage in Nogard is 20 Lears per month while the basic food basket can cost around 25/30 Lears.
Queen Lettice IV is... complacent. She enjoys the banquets, parties, alcohol, and food that her status affords her, but does nothing to try to maintain it. It is her assistant, Thomas, who truly governs Nogard, and has done so for the past three years. No noble consults Lettice; if they need to make an important decision, they always consult Thomas.
Thomas Marcé is a 24-year-old, too young to be taken seriously were it not for his eloquence, intelligence, and exceptional military strategy. No one knows where he came from, he has no prior record in his position, and his objective is a mystery.
Tsantar Empire
The Empire of Tsantar is a democratic country, although only two parties participate: the party of the supreme leader and the opposition. The supreme leader and highest military figure is Carlo Cassato. Carlo governs with his team of ministers, among whom Paolo Swimn stands out as Carlo's right-hand man and closest friend.
The ideas of isolation have always been there, not implemented due to logistical reasons, but since Paolo took office, several of those ideas have finally been put into practice: border closures, censorship of foreign products, massive investment in the military, and indoctrination.
Tsantar has a population of 4.5 million inhabitants, there is no public poverty index but it is estimated to be 72% and 70% illiteracy.
Tsantar borders the mountain range that runs through Everyard, allowing it to exploit the natural mines the range offers and thus have mining as a major source of income. Among the minerals they extract are PFE (gunpowder, less useful, and their ignorance about firearms makes it even less useful) and magic conductor for Permigaminos (MP).
The currency of Tsantar is the "Tas", with denominations of 1, 5, 20 and 50.
The minimum wage in Tsantar is 15 Tas, while the basic food basket costs between 25 and 30 Tas.
Tsantar has no trade agreements with any other country; it used to have a trading partner in what is now the ultimate desert, that was before the "divine" war occurred.
Paolo Swimn has a prior record in his position, an unverifiable life, an ambiguous objective, an ambition that surpasses Carlo's, and impeccable social skills.
The Sacred Lands of Millis
Millis is a neutral territory. In its 204 years of existence, it has never intervened in or supported war; that is its identity. They are peaceful and just. They worship the goddess of light, Emillia, who, according to myth, descended to Earth 200 years ago to free Millis from the clutches of the ancient demon king.
Baptism, attending mass, being monogamous, practicing fasting, and loving one's neighbor are mandatory rules.
In Millis, High Priestess Marchosias rules. She is the thirty-fifth to hold the position, having assumed it six years ago after being the only one to pass the divine test. Marchosias was part of the group that unsuccessfully attempted to defeat the demon king Kasth, and she was the sole survivor.
In Millis, foreigners are not welcome, mostly because outsiders do not understand Millis' laws and rules and end up disrespecting its culture.
Millis uses the Lear as its main currency; its economy is sustained by the textile industry and livestock farming, which are huge in Millis.
Millis has the highest tax rate on the continent (although they call it tithing, it's still the same thing) and they allocate a large part of those profits to the infrastructure of churches and chapels.
The only country they are at war with is the Kingdom of Darkness.
Kingdom of Darkness
The demons that inhabit this land are not demons as such, they are descendants of the demon kings, and the demon kings are not pure demons either, they are physical and very weak forms of the original demons.
The demon king Kasth is the physical vessel of the great lord of Wrath, primordial demon and third emperor of hell.
Demons on Earth are grotesque beings, imitations of the original demons but far weaker. Depending on their power, they are assigned one of the following titles: Minion, Knight, Duke, Prince, Marquis, and King.
It is estimated that there are around 4 million demons, most of whom are minions (twice as strong as an average human), there are about four thousand knights, about 50 Marquises, 20 Princes, 5 Dukes and a single great Demon King.
The demons' goal is total expansion across the continent, the perversion and eventual eradication of the weak hamana race and the stupid elven race.
Demonic Dukes: Currently there are only 3 active ones, 2 died and a replacement is being sought.
Duke "Aim": He is the duke about whom the least information is available. It is said that he has a beautiful face, a wicked smile, and a black cat that always sleeps on his shoulder. According to the few surviving accounts, Aim possesses the truth about all things.
Duchess "Gremory": No one has seen her true form. She takes the form of a beautiful woman draped in pink silk dresses and a veil that partially covers her face. She travels seated on the shell of an ancient tortoise. It is said that she captivates anyone who looks into her eyes.
Duke "Dantalion": He appears as a gray-skinned man who always carries a book. He is said to be able to control thoughts and enjoys torturing his victims.
Duke "Vassago": The duke who died in battle 20 years ago. It is said that he was able to see up to 10 seconds into the future. Executioner: unknown.
Duke "Astaroth": The strongest duke, fights with a fire sword and §¶$#?.
Forest of Spirits
Located at the far west of the continent is the largest forested area on the continent, home to neutral spirits and elves.
Spirits are seen as divine messengers or manifestations of nature, peaceful beings without purpose. Different types exist, each representing a different state of nature. They ignore humans and elves and abhor demons. They have no physical form; they are intangible and therefore cannot harm or be harmed.
The elves live in the middle of the forest, in treehouses connected by suspension bridges. The ruler is chosen by an assembly that values wisdom and simplicity above all else. The current ruler is named "Alfar Volundr," an ancient elf of 240 years.
On the other hand, the dark elves live deeper in the forest and do not recognize Alfar as their ruler. The dark elves are less communal than the elves and are more closed to dialogue.
Both dark elves and elves harbor a deep resentment toward humans due to an event that nearly wiped them out 600 years ago. At that time, humans were conquerors, hunting anyone who wasn't human, anyone who didn't share their ideology, or anyone who stood in their way. Humans hunted elves for centuries until they were almost extinct. The few who remained took refuge deep within the forest, where they still live today. In modern times, there is no longer hatred from humans toward elves, but there is still hatred from elves toward humans.
Eastern Peninsula
The eastern peninsula comprises the coastal countries and islands whose economies are based on marine resources. They do not have a single president or ruler representing all the islands; each has its own local leader, rules, and culture.
Piracy, contract killings, illegal businesses, and the black market are also rampant here. All of this is due to weak security laws and the legal loopholes created by having different laws in each country.
Final desert
The desert at the end is the portion of land located at the southern tip, where the continent ends.
Before becoming an arid desert, this place was known as "Terralea," land of eternal spring. A series of events led to its current state, all initiated by an attempted revolution and culminating in the first and only officially recorded divine intervention.
Many years ago, a group called "ARC" wanted a revolution. They sought to eradicate all inequality and considered Nogard their greatest enemy. They began with good intentions, but their determination led them to attempt to achieve their goal by any means, including the murder of innocents—thousands of innocents.
ARC carried out its biggest attack in Terralea's capital under the command of its leader, Alexander Barnes, planting and detonating dozens of kilograms of explosives, sowing terror. They used this as an opportunity to seize the government palace and from there threaten the rest of the nations. At first, they weren't taken seriously, and only rescue teams were dispatched. When those teams failed to return, it became clear that this was serious.
This sparked the months-long war later known as the "Divine Incident." The best mages from each nation, the most skilled warriors, and the finest martial artists participated in this war. It was no exaggeration; ARC had the resources to defend itself. Among its ranks were some of the most talented warriors to have ever lived.
Near the end of the war, seeing that ARC was on the ropes, Alexander decided to use his last resort. Following the instructions of an invocation grimoire, he offered his son's life to obtain the aid of the great lord of Wrath. Not his weakened physical body, but his original form that rules Hell. Kasth descended to Earth and, in the blink of an eye, engulfed the surface in eternal flames before being sealed away by an angel—all in a third of a second.
Autonomous peoples
Towns or transit towns, not recognized as countries due to their small size in comparison or their dependence on real kingdoms. Most of these are located in the northeast, at the foot of the mountain range and in cold climates.
Magic
Magic in this world is the manifestation of the energy that flows through all living beings. This doesn't mean everyone can use magic; possessing it is different from using it. Only 1 in 50,000 births produces a magician, a person with the ability to draw energy from their body and shape it.
There are three general classes of magic: Attack, Support, and Defense.
Each of these classes is further divided into more classes that only specify the user's magic even more.
People usually only control one general class, but on rare occasions, one can possess two or even all three classes.
Magic only manifests when the user goes through a traumatic event or finds themselves in a life-or-death situation.
As I mentioned before, magic is energy, and every spell draws energy from your body. If you cast a spell that exceeds your energy capacity, the spell isn't canceled; it exacts its toll in the most violent way possible. Paralysis of both hands, permanent tingling in the arms, or even permanent loss of mobility in both arms. No known cure.
Attack magic has other subclasses such as "Lightning" or "Power".
Support magic has subclasses such as "Single Element", "Healing" or "Manipulation".
Defensive magic has subclasses such as "Forge", "Transmutation", or "Total Defense".
The highest level of magic is studied at GEM, the largest and most prestigious magic university on the continent. GEM is affiliated with Nogard, located in the south of the country, and teaches magic, swordsmanship, alchemy, and theory.
GEM is practically a city, huge facilities with dormitories, indoor and outdoor lounges, a huge library and equipped training fields.
To enter you must be in one of these groups: Contributor or Server.
If you are a contributor, you are a student with a noble family or recommended by important people.
If you are a servant, you are a scholarship recipient in exchange for serving Nogard after graduation for the rest of your life.
Fencing
Fencing has three different styles.
The northern style is the most standardized, being the simplest to learn and focusing much more on strategy than on the talent of the swordsman himself.
The Eastern style is known as the suicide style; it consists of letting the opponent control the battle until you find a minimal opening and relying entirely on your precision to execute the single, final blow.
Southern style is a style practiced by the bourgeoisie, a refined and elegant style. Created to be seen, not necessarily for battle.
