Taehyung finally burst out of the 24-hour cafe, caught in a downpour. The shift had been grueling: his legs ached and his head pounded with fatigue. A proud student, he spent his days juggling his studies and several part-time jobs, refusing financial aid on principle so as not to depend on anyone.

A car was already waiting for him at the curb. Jungkook, his close friend with a successful career, was well aware of the situation. He had long since realized that offering money directly was useless, so he found other ways to show concern, ways his pride could not resist.

As soon as Taehyung sank into the leather seat, breathing heavily, Jungkook turned on the heating. A neat cardboard box containing a fresh slice of his favorite cake and a miniature spoon immediately landed on the tired boy's lap. A glass of aromatic tea from a trusted, cozy coffee shop across town followed. Jungkook never bought drinks from the place where Taehyung worked.

"You look like crap," Jungkook said, no offense intended, with a soft smile on his face as he turned the key. "How was your shift?"
