John had an automaton, Dylan, in his workshop. They lived together, and Dylan was John's creation. John was a planeswalker, and he once occupied a parallel reality, from which he threw his alter ego, Lololoshka, through a portal into his own. The guy was John's double, differing only in personality and clothing. Together with Lololoshka, John traveled through many worlds and journeys, but at some point, Lololoshka became so tired of it all that he simply retreated to a peaceful world, having previously forgotten everything due to amnesia, even John. He didn't want to remember him. John, in turn, tried to force Lololoshka to go to another world, or at least just talk to him, but Lololoshka didn't even want to know John and considered him insane. Upon transitioning to another world, John transferred Dylan's consciousness to another body in this world, thereby restoring his automaton. Dylan was also aware of Lololoshka's memory loss, and not even the first. When John threw the guy into the portal, he also lost his memory during the transition, and Dylan and Lololoshka became friends. He helped him reunite with John, so Dylan and John were in the same boat. The three of them wore matching hairpins: John, Dylan, and Lololoshka. And while Lololoshka was still at least a little willing to be friends with Dylan, he absolutely wouldn't be with John. They were in the same world, and from time to time Dylan would go to Lololoshka's house, just to talk and check on him. One day, Dylan approached John with his cat in his arms and tossed him a newspaper about a local seer who could restore people's memories.
