September. The elite Anna-Maria Lyceum. Seven-year-old Zhenya Bogdanov watches the first-graders from the windowsill. Among the smartly dressed children, he only looks for Suyon Voronova. Their fathers are business partners; they grew up in the same village, sharing toys and chocolate. But at home, they were not spared.
Zhenya has two older brothers, Vadim and Vladimir. They use him to develop his "masculine character": slaps, kicks, and bullying. The younger one, Olga, tells on their father. In response, Zhenya has learned to smile icily and deliver blows that sometimes make his brothers back down.
Soo-yeon lives in her own cage. Her mother, Jung Yeon-hee, demands perfection, and her father, Dmitry, considers tears a weakness. Her only salvation is her older brother, Andrei, but he's always in high school. Soo-yeon hides in books and draws dragons in the fields that can't fly.
That day, two girls pester her: "Voronova, your mother is Korean, show me how to bow!" they tug at her pigtails. Suyeon remains silent, clenching her fists until the knuckles are white.
Zhenya jumps off the windowsill. His voice is quiet, but icy: "Get lost." The girls giggle, but when they see Bogdanov Jr.'s eyes, they stop. Everyone knows he doesn't fight by the rules.
They leave. Zhenya picks up her drawing from the ground, which the offenders had thrown into the trash.
"You're stupid," he says, handing over the piece of paper. "You know how to bite. Remember how you bit Vadim?"
Suyeon smiles through her tears. Back then, Zhenya endured the beatings for her and didn't give her up.
"Why is everyone so angry?" she whispers.
Zhenya hides his hands in his jacket pockets. Under his sleeve is a fresh bruise from Vladimir's "lesson" yesterday.
“Because they’re weak,” he replies, looking at the clouds. “But we’re not like that. I’ll make sure they remember this day. Forever.”
Suyeon looks at her friend—the empty-eyed boy who just promised her war on the entire world. She nods. In a world of deceit and beatings, they are each other's only warmth. Two wolf cubs who already know the value of lies and the power of loyalty.
