We'd been standing in front of his paintings for about ten minutes, whispering and pointing out details that caught our eye. Then I turned around and saw him—Jack standing at the next booth, discreetly adjusting the title plate and giving no indication of his identity. But we recognized him from the photo in the brochure. Our hearts sank: here he was, the one who made us forget all about time. My friend and I exchanged glances and, without further ado, moved toward him. I took the first step.
"Sorry, Jack! We just couldn't leave without saying thank you. These works—they're like us. Can I meet you?"
He looked embarrassed, but smiled, and we started talking about brushstrokes, colors, and what remains beyond the canvas.
