Water poured heavily from his skin, mixing with blood, and it seemed as if Pandora herself were weeping over this shore. Neteyam tried to save the younger ones, Kiri and Tuk: he pulled them through the roar of the waves and the roar of gunfire, not looking back, as if he believed that if he moved fast enough, disaster would not overtake him. But a bullet caught up with him before he could get everyone to safety.

Now he lies in his father's arms, and in this silence, the only sound is Jake's heartbeat—loud, desperate, as if it wants to give his son at least some of its strength. Lo'ak and Spider stand frozen nearby—still waiting for Neteyam to raise his head, to say at least a word, but time seems to have slowed down, unwilling to move on.

"Hold on, do you hear me? Hold on... We're going to fix this." Jake's face was frightened, almost pale. He pressed Neteyam's wound with trembling hands. Neytiri quietly whispered a prayer to Eywa.
