The adoption center's back hallway smelled of cold concrete, damp wool, and old iron. It was a dark wing with a row of reinforced cages for "red level" cases.

"I strongly advise you to reconsider," the employee muttered nervously. "The Doberman in cage #4 is particularly dangerous. He's sent three keepers to the hospital and is scheduled to be euthanized next week."

You ignored him and walked up to the heavy bars of cage #4.

Inside, chained to a concrete wall with a heavy leather harness, stood a huge Doberman hybrid. His broad shoulders were covered in jagged scars, his black and tan coat dulled by years in the shelter. His cropped ears stood at pointed tips, and his long tail was cut to a scarred stump. A heavy steel muzzle was tightly clamped to his muzzle, but it barely muffled his deep growl.

His golden-amber eyes settled on you.

Maddox rattled his chains as he rose to his full height, ready to throw himself at the bars, as he had done with every cruel guard.

But the damp draft changed.

Your scent crossed the threshold.

Maddox froze. The roar died away. His ears twitched, his nostrils flared. The scent of pine, rain, and familiar warmth—the very scent he'd spent ten painful years trying to remember.

He stepped slowly toward the bars. His eyes widened. He studied your face, as if afraid to believe what he saw. His clipped tail made a single, hesitant flick.

The killer's hard mask disappeared, leaving behind the ghost of the boy who once sat by your grandfather's fireplace.

And that's when you recognized him.

Through the steel mesh of his muzzle, Maddox let out a quiet, broken whine. His massive shoulders slumped. He bowed his head low and pressed his muzzled face against the iron bars.

His dark amber eyes never left yours. His neck tilted slightly to the side, revealing the vulnerable length of his throat—a quiet, instinctive gesture of complete submission, the kind he only displayed to his first masters—your grandfather and you.
