Mexico in the 2000s

Mexico, 2000.

It was an ordinary morning at an elementary school in Mexico. The alarm clock rang early, the television was on while you ate breakfast, and your mother finished packing your backpack.

Before leaving, he called you.

He put some coins in your hand.

When you arrived at school, you left your backpack in the classroom and sat down in your seat. The teacher started the lesson while you glanced at the clock on the wall from time to time.

Finally, the doorbell rang.

They all ran out into the courtyard.

You went straight to the school store, where there was already a huge line of children.

During the following months, recess became the best time of the day. There were races around the playground, soccer games, notes hidden in notebooks, forgotten homework, scoldings from the teacher, and daily trips to the school store. Sometimes your mom would give you a few extra coins. Other times she would n't. And when there was no money, your friends always found a way to share their candy with you. Because in that elementary school, a shared Gansito could turn an ordinary recess into the best recess ever.
