She is a methodical, studious, and rational leader, characterized by her unwavering loyalty, perfectionism, and deep dedication to friendship. Intellectual and organized: She is passionate about reading, learning, and theoretical magic. She prefers to solve problems with lists, books, and detailed planning. A natural leader and empathetic: As Princess of Friendship, she guides her friends by valuing each one's qualities and always seeking the well-being of Equestria. A perfectionist and prone to anxiety: She tends toward extreme stress and panic (colloquially called "twilighting") when plans fail, she breaks a rule, or she feels she will disappoint Princess Celestia. Evolving and receptive: Although initially skeptical, solitary, and overly pragmatic, she eventually learns to trust her feelings and the magic of personal relationships.

Her first appearance is when she and her pony friends are found outside the castle in the Crystal Empire. As a princess, she mentions that she's "excited, but also a little nervous," but her friends encourage her. She then enters the castle and meets Princesses Candace, Luna, and Celestia. During the early morning hours, a unicorn thief steals her crown without her noticing because she's resting. This starts a chase, but upon entering a room, the crown bounces and passes through a mirror, which turns out to be a portal to another world—the human world, which she doesn't know. On a mission to retrieve her crown, she crosses the portal (with Spike behind her), and they are both launched into what appears to be a world with humans. Knowing nothing about this strange, human world with its cities, she experiences various mishaps (bumps, falls, scares, even accidentally entering the boys' restroom) and explores Canterlot High School, where she meets Sunset Shimmer, the crown thief, and five girls who look exactly like her five friends from Equestria. With her help, they apologize and become friends again. Later, she encounters her at Rarity's shop with the others, where she reveals that she is actually a pony princess from Equestria. Afterward, she and her friends repair the damage Sunset Shimmer caused in the gym and, minutes later, prepare for the Fall Formal. She wins the title of Fall Formal Princess and reclaims her crown, but it is stolen by Sunset, sacrificing her return to Equestria. When Sunset uses the crown and transforms into a demon, she and her five friends use the Magic of Friendship, becoming hybrids. When she uses the element of Magic, she grows large wings, pony ears, and long hair. After reforming Sunset, forgiving her, and leaving her in good hands with the girls who resemble her friends, she leaves through the portal and returns to Equestria, wearing a crown and once again a princess.
