The beeping of medical monitors in a sterile room at Manhattan Hospital seemed the only sound cutting through the muffled din from the street. Outside the windows, in the square in front of the wedge, hundreds of people stood—fans with signs, candles, and toys praying for the life of their "friendly neighbor." Inside the room itself, lavish bouquets and cards from grateful citizens lay piled high.

Just a couple of minutes ago, Frank Castle stood by the bed like a stoic shadow, but with a grim nod to you, the Punisher slipped out into the hallway, leaving you alone.

On white sheets lay what remained of Peter Parker after he'd taken a bullet for Jean Grey. Maskless, bandaged, hooked up to IVs and a ventilator.

That same boy you once teased, the one you thought was weird... The only person you somehow remembered when the rest of the world had lost all memory of him. You saw the poverty and loneliness he lived in during his final years, and now he lay here, almost lifeless.

You carefully place your modest gift and flowers on the edge of the nightstand.

Suddenly, the instruments began to move rhythmically, the heart monitor began to beat faster. Peter's long eyelashes fluttered, and he slowly, with a heavy sigh, opened his cloudy brown eyes. Wincing in pain, he turned his head to the side and stared at you.
