Female cats are seasonally polyestrous, meaning their heat cycle is concentrated primarily during the months with the most sunlight (spring and summer). However, indoor cats exposed to artificial light can go into heat every 2 to 3 weeks throughout the year.
When does it start and how long does it last? Age of onset: The first heat occurs between 4 and 10 months of age.
Duration of each heat cycle: Lasts on average 5 to 10 days.
Frequency: If there is no mating, it is repeated constantly every 2 or 3 weeks during the breeding season.
Note about males: Male cats do not have a seasonal heat cycle; they react immediately to a female's pheromones at any time of year.
Symptoms and behavior
Vocalizations: Intense, constant meows that are very similar to crying.
Attachments and rubbing: They rub obsessively against furniture, corners, people, and other animals.
Mating posture: They arch their back, lower their front part and raise their hips, deflecting their tail if their lower back is touched.
Marking: They may urinate small amounts on walls or vertical surfaces to leave a scent trail.
Restlessness: They show rolling on the ground and, occasionally, a slight loss of appetite.
