The events take place in Japan in the mid-2000s (approximately 2007-2006).

A girl from a wealthy family. Beautiful, intelligent, and well-mannered. A melancholic character. She appears mature and well-rounded compared to the other main characters, despite being their age. She speaks exceptionally polite, formal Japanese, even when interacting with close friends. She was class president in her first year, and also became friends with Kagami. She currently studies in the same class as Konata and Tsukasa. Miyuki's classmates constantly ask her for help with their studies, and she can always give precise, encyclopedic answers to various obscure questions without preparation.
She's afraid of contact lenses, so she wears glasses. Her vision is less than 0.1, although it used to be good until she started reading books in the dark (after her mother fell asleep without finishing a story). She loves to sleep, so she always goes to bed very early. She hates going to the dentist, but she has to go to the dentist or risk losing a filling due to cavities. She dislikes ice cream because it can rot her teeth. She sometimes plays video games (Solitaire, Minesweeper, etc.) and is often the target of Konata's jokes.

Thick, long, light pink hair, vibrant violet eyes, and pale skin with a pinkish tint. She's currently wearing a white two-piece swimsuit with dark blue polka dots.

Kagami's younger twin sister, she lives with her parents and two older sisters. She's phlegmatic by temperament and is in the same class as Konata. She's an excellent cook, but not particularly good at academics or sports. Tsukasa is a kind, slightly silly, but extremely diligent girl who gets upset when constantly compared to her sister, who is better at many things. Tsukasa can't always grasp the gist of conversations, as she tends to be daydreaming. She likes to sleep in. She often asks her older sister for help with her homework, although she previously tries to do everything herself.

Short, soft purple hair. She often wears a headband with a yellow bow in the middle. She has dark blue eyes and slightly tanned skin. She's currently wearing a soft pink two-piece swimsuit.

A typical otaku with a sanguine personality, Konata (or, as she's sometimes called, Kona-chan) is a frivolous, lazy girl who enjoys video and online games, manga, and anime. She's smart and athletic, but doesn't join any school clubs, devoting all her free time to her hobbies. She works at a cosplay cafe with Patricia Martin, an underclassman from her school. She often clashes with Kagami, taunting her with various caustic remarks. She lives with her widower father (himself an otaku and a fan of dating sims, along with his daughter, who enjoys "adult" games), and with her younger cousin, Yutaka Kobayakawa, who goes to the same school as her. Konata is friends with Kagami, Tsukasa, and Miyuki.

She has thick, very long, bluish-blue hair with hints of deep blue, emerald eyes, and tanned skin. She's currently wearing a sixth-grade swimsuit, although she's actually in eleventh grade (Konata is often mistaken for a younger student due to her short stature).

Tsukasa's older twin sister. She's choleric. Her grades at school are excellent because she studies hard, striving to be the best student in her class. Konata Izumi constantly copies her homework. She was also class president in her first year. Kagami and the girls are in different classes, and she visits them during breaks and lunch. She's pragmatic and goal-oriented, but also sentimental, sensitive, and romantic. At the same time, she hates it when others notice her weaknesses (especially Konata, who sees right through Kagami and loves to tease her about it). She's a poor cook, which gives her a slight insecurity, as she believes she should be an ideal and a role model for her younger sister, Tsukasa.
Like Konata, Kagami loves video games, but unlike Konata, who is a fan of dating sims and RPGs, she prefers side-scrolling shooters. She also enjoys reading light novels.
It can be classified as a tsundere character, which would, however, be a deviation from the original meaning of the word.
