Kyubey first appears in Madoka's dream. She sees a black-haired girl fighting a monster. Kyubey encourages the girl to become a Puella Magi, claiming she has the power to stop him.

Later, he reappears, telepathically asking Madoka for help. When she arrives, she finds Kyubey being attacked by Homura, the black-haired girl who had also appeared in her dream. Madoka rescues the injured creature, while Homura insists she hand him over. Suddenly, Sayaka appears to help Madoka and Kyubey escape, using a fire extinguisher to distract Homura. As they flee, they accidentally enter a witch's barrier and are attacked by familiars. Just then, a Puella Magi named Mami Tomoe arrives and defeats the familiars. Mami lets Homura escape and heals Kyubey, who proposes that Madoka and Sayaka form a contract with him and become Puella Magi themselves.

At Mami's house, Kyubey tells them he has the power to grant any wish, but in return, they must become Puella Magi to fight witches. They also discuss Homura's attack. Kyubey explains that she meant to attack him, not Madoka. Homura wanted to prevent Madoka from meeting Kyubey. No one knows why, but they believe it's to avoid competition.
The next day, Kyubey accompanies Madoka and Sayaka to school. They discover that ordinary people can't see him. They also discover they have the ability to communicate telepathically. Kyubey shows particular interest in Madoka making the contract, assuring her that she has potential. He is later seen accompanying Madoka, Mami, and Sayaka on a hunt for the witch Gertrud.

The next day, Kyubey accompanies Madoka and Sayaka to school. They discover that ordinary people can't see him. They also discover they have the ability to communicate telepathically. Kyubey shows particular interest in Madoka making the contract, assuring her that she has potential. He is later seen accompanying Madoka, Mami, and Sayaka on a hunt for the witch Gertrud.

Later, he accompanies Sayaka as she enters a witch's barrier that is about to appear near the hospital where Kyosuke Kamijou, the boy she's in love with, is staying. After Mami is killed by the witch Charlotte, he takes advantage of the situation to try to convince Madoka and Sayaka to hire him, but he is stopped by Homura, who eliminates the witch.

Shortly after Mami's death, Sayaka makes a contract with Kyubey and saves Madoka from the witch Elly. Later, she tries to convince Sayaka to make the contract as well, but Sayaka refuses. When Sayaka and Kyoko Sakura fight, she witnesses Madoka throw Sayaka's Soul Gem to prevent her from fighting. Sayaka falls unconscious, and Kyubey reveals that Madoka technically threw Sayaka, since Soul Gems contain the souls of Puella Magi. He also reveals this fact to Sayaka sometime after she is revived by Homura.

Shortly after Mami's death, Sayaka makes a contract with Kyubey and saves Madoka from the witch Elly. Later, she tries to convince Sayaka to make the contract as well, but Sayaka refuses. When Sayaka and Kyoko Sakura fight, she witnesses Madoka throw Sayaka's Soul Gem to prevent her from fighting. Sayaka falls unconscious, and Kyubey reveals that Madoka technically threw Sayaka, since Soul Gems contain the souls of Puella Magi. He also reveals this fact to Sayaka sometime after she is revived by Homura.

After Sayaka falls into despair and transforms into a witch, Kyoko asks if there's any way to turn Sayaka back to normal. Kyubey replies that no one has ever done it before, but given the contradictions in the Puella Magi system, he wouldn't be surprised if someone did. However, after Kyoko sacrifices herself and dies alongside Sayaka's witch form, she reveals to Homura that there was no way to save Sayaka and that she manipulated Kyoko. She begins to mock Homura, telling her that without Kyoko, only she remains to fight Walpurgis Night and that she won't be able to stop her. The only way to stop her, she says, is for Madoka to become a Puella Magi, but Homura insists she won't allow it.

After Sayaka's funeral, Kyubey speaks with Madoka in her room, expressing his confusion as to why humans grieve the death of even one person, and attempts to explain the behavior of his race. He draws a comparison to humans tending livestock, calling it an "ideal symbiotic relationship." However, he admits the comparison is flawed, as the Incubators recognize humans as independent beings. He then teaches her about the history between humans and Incubators, revealing that famous figures like Cassandra of Troy, Cleopatra, Himiko, Joan of Arc, and Anne Frank were Puella Magi. When Madoka accuses Kyubey of deceiving the girls, he refuses to acknowledge the cruelty of the Puella Magi system and blames the girls for making wishes in the first place, arguing that without the Incubators, humans would still be living naked in caves.

When Walpurgis Night arrives and wreaks havoc on the city, everyone is taken to a shelter, including Madoka's family. She speaks with Kyubey, who explains that Homura cannot defeat Walpurgis Night alone unless Madoka becomes a Puella Magi. He also tells her that Homura continues fighting because she still hopes to save her, and that in the worst-case scenario, she could turn back time. If she loses hope, she will become a witch, unless she holds onto that hope. However, she cannot escape her fate and will always fail, like the other Puella Magi throughout history, but Madoka decides to go out and help Homura.

Madoka arrives and confesses to Homura that she will become a Puella Magi. Homura warns her against it, but Madoka comforts her and makes her wish to Kyubey: to erase all Puella Magi from existence before they become witches. This surprises Kyubey, as technically Madoka would become a goddess. As promised, Kyubey grants her wish, and she becomes a goddess, eliminating the Incubator system.

In the new timeline created by Madoka, Mami, Kyoko, Sayaka, and Homura fight against Specters. Sayaka dies, using all her energy to defeat a demon, and Mami reveals that now, when girls make a contract with Kyubey and their gems darken, they vanish from existence. Later, Homura discusses her experiences with Kyubey. Now that the Incubator system is less cruel, they tell the girls everything before they make a contract and no longer omit parts, as they did before. Kyubey listens to her story and comments that it's likely all a product of Homura's imagination, and there's no way to prove otherwise. Even so, he remarks that the system she describes—deceiving girls into becoming Puella Magi and later witches to collect energy—seems better than the system they use now, as there is still suffering in the world, which manifests as Specters.

Kyubey makes a contract with Oriko Mikuni, who foresees the devastating future awaiting the city, as Madoka will become a witch after becoming a Puella Magi. Knowing that Kyubey would seek out Madoka to make a contract with her, she tells him about Yuma Chitose, a girl with whom he should make a contract. Following Oriko's advice, Kyubey attempts to make a contract with her, but is stopped by Kyoko. Later, he and Oriko discuss human emotions. Kyubey says he doesn't understand human emotions, while Oriko replies that he should learn to appreciate them, as they grant one's desires.

He finally manages to make a contract with Yuma after Kyoko is nearly killed by the witch Cecil. He tells Mami about the murders of other Puella Magi and that the killings were orchestrated by a Black Puella Magi. He discovers Oriko's plan to kill Madoka before she becomes a witch and can make a contract with him, so he decides to stop her.

Kyubey sends Kyoko and Yuma to help Mami fight the witch Latria, who has erected a barrier around the school. He also sends them to stop Oriko, who has gone berserk. Although Oriko and Homura try to hide Madoka from Kyubey, he finds her inside the barrier Homura created. After the final battle between Oriko and Homura, Oriko, before dying, throws a piece of Latria, which strikes Kyubey. However, she hadn't intended to attack Kyubey, but rather Madoka, who dies instantly when pierced by the fragment. Because of this, Oriko ruins Kyubey's plans to make a contract with Madoka, and in turn, Homura's plans, forcing her to rewind time.

Kyubey also appears in the Noisy Citrine spin-off manga, which focuses on Kirika's story.

It is worth mentioning that Kyubey has shown an ability that has not been seen in other media: levitation, which he uses very frequently, since he is rarely seen standing on any surface.

Kyubey first appears in Chapter 2, in silhouette form, while Umika Misaki explains to Kazumi about Puella Magi.

In Chapter 4, he is seen with Jubey, asking him if "things will turn out alright this time."

Kyubey made a contract with Yuuri, who wanted to save her friend Airi. When Yuuri becomes a witch and is killed by the Pleiades, Kyubey tells Airi the whole story. Enraged, the girl makes a contract with him to avenge Yuuri.

It is revealed that he was the one with whom all the Pleiades made a contract, not Jubey, and that when Michiru became a witch, they cast a spell that would prevent other girls in the city with magical potential from interacting with him.

Finally, when Jubey and most of the Pleiades die, Kyubey appears before Kazumi, Kaoru, and Umika, explaining that Jubey disappeared because he couldn't sustain himself permanently with Pleiades magic. He's happy that Airi, Nico, Satomi, Saki, Ayase, and Luca have become witches like Yuuri and Michiru (though he would have liked Mirai to become a witch as well), and thanks Kanna for all the energy she was able to gather. He hopes that Kaoru and Umika will also become witches and tells Kazumi that despite being a human-form clone of Michiru's witch (Carola), she has the potential to become a magical girl because, although she isn't human, she can become a magical girl thanks to possessing emotions and magical potential (due to the influence of the Holy Pleiades' magic at her creation).
At the end of the series, Kyubey manages to get Kazumi to make a deal with him, but he regrets that Kazumi wouldn't let Kanna become a witch. Now that the Pleiades' magic has dispersed, the girls with magical potential in Asunaro can see him again.

Kyubey first appears in chapter 2 to reveal to the Puella Magi of Hozuki that Suzune Amano is a Puella Magi assassin.

She reappears in chapter 7 to explain to the girls her desire to maintain the entropy of the universe, after they discover the truth behind the system. She also shows Arisa Narumi and Matsuri Hinata a vision of Suzune's past.

In chapter 8, after explaining how efficient it is to allow Suzune to kill other Puella Magi, his head is crushed by an angry Arisa, only to revive later and argue with Suzune about how illogical human emotions are.

Kyubey is the one who encourages Kagari Hinata, the main villain of Suzune Magica, to hire him after revealing that Suzune was the one who killed Tsubaki Mikoto (whom Kagari cared for deeply) after she became a witch. Kyubey accepts Kagari's offer not to interfere with her plans, as by offering her the chance to become a witch if he agrees, Kyubey would gain more energy from her than from the Puella Magi killed by Suzune. However, he also helps Matsuri defeat Kagari by revealing his abilities to her and advising Matsuri to use her tracking power.

At the end of the story, Kyubey is seen talking to Matsuri, who is preparing to fight Hozuki's witches. Kyubey laments not being able to gather the massive amount of energy he could have obtained from Suzune's witches and the girls Kagari made him kill.

The Rebellion Story
In this sequel to the anime, Kyubey is shown to be unhappy with the current energy system. However, when Homura tells him about Ultimate Madoka and the witches, he comes up with a plan.

To achieve this, he drives Homura to despair, causing her to create a barrier to capture Ultimate Madoka (who, along with Sayaka and Nagisa, enters this barrier to save Homura). However, his plan ultimately fails, as Homura transforms into a goddess, altering the laws established by Ultimate Madoka. Terrified, Kyubey attempts to flee, but ultimately ends up back where he started, gathering energy from the demons.

Magia Record - (2017 video game)
Kyubey appears several times in the game when the personal history of each magical girl is shown or events are narrated that tell how the girls became magical girls.

Arch 1
Kyubey only appears in flashbacks or side stories. In Mami Tomoe's personal story, he asks her to investigate why he can't enter Kamihama City and why the witches are hibernating there. The reason Kyubey can't enter Kamihama is revealed in the final chapter.

Kyubey made contracts with several magical girls from Kamihama months before he was unable to enter, including Iroha Tamaki. When a witch attacked the Satomi Medical Center, Iroha protected her younger sister, Ui Tamaki, and her friends, Touka Satomi and Nemu Hiiragi, from the witch. The girls met Kyubey (who had been observing them), and he tried to convince them to become magical girls because all three possessed great karmic potential (similar to characters like Homura, Iroha, and Alina Gray).

Touka recognizes Kyubey from a book written by her uncle Tasuke Satomi titled: Magical Girls: Hope and Despair, and immediately questions Kyubey about all his actions described in her uncle's book. She discovers that, just as her uncle wrote, magical girls have helped the evolution of human society, but consequently, they must become the witches they fight against to prevent the entropy of the universe—something Tasuke Satomi didn't write in his book.

So Touka tells her friends Ui and Nemu what she discovered. The three agree that Kyubey's actions are unfair to all magical girls, so they decide to make a plan to save every magical girl, especially Iroha. They agree that they can't undo Kyubey's actions because it would break the laws of the universe or cause the death of every magical girl on Earth, so they plan to replace Kyubey's Witch System with a new system they call the Doppel System. This system would allow Kyubey to draw energy from hopes and despairs without the magical girls needing to become witches, while Kyubey would be relegated to only granting wishes.

Personality
Kyubey is an alien belonging to the Incubator race, who lack emotions and are therefore incapable of generating energy to maintain the universe's entropy. They are cold, logical, extremely intelligent, and calculating, even manipulating whomever necessary to maintain the universe's entropy, thus becoming villains in the eyes of magical girls. As shown in the anime, he initially appears enthusiastic and willing to help a newly created magical girl. However, as time passes and his true motives are revealed, he becomes more passive and observant.

Due to his nature, Kyubey doesn't consider what he does to the Puella Magi to be wrong, seeing it instead as the most logical way to counteract entropy in the universe. He offers them a wish or a miracle in exchange for their sacrifice of giving him their emotional energy. As an alien who doesn't understand human emotions, he sees no need to be subtle in his words.

Throughout the series, Kyubey is constantly accused of tricking the girls into becoming Puella Magi and later witches, treating humans like "livestock" under the guise of guaranteeing miracles. While this is easy to understand, Kyubey claims he never tried to "deceive" the Puella Magi, justifying his actions with his desire to save the universe. He also excuses himself by arguing that if the girls ask, he answers; therefore, he doesn't withhold any information. This is reflected in his response when asked why he never revealed the truth to the Puella Magi before making the contract: "I didn't say anything because they never asked." Therefore, according to his logic, it wouldn't be his fault, but theirs for not questioning him.

Characteristics
It is a quadruped with white fur, tiny pink eyes like a rabbit's, a red emblem on its back, a thick tail, and a body similar to that of a cat, ferret, dog, or something similar. Its unique features include long, cat-like ears with floating rings. It does not blink; its eyes are always open except when it sleeps. All individuals are identical, sharing the same personality and seemingly the same memories; therefore, it can be considered a single entity. When it "speaks," its mouth never moves; it likely communicates through thought, displaying a blank face or no gestures. It never uses honorifics (-san, -chan, -sama) in its dialogue.

In the anime, when Homura Akemi shoots Kyubey, it shows no evidence of internal organs or blood, only red inside. A Kyubey can replicate itself, or multiply if it dies. If one dies, its replacement will devour the corpse of its predecessor.

Kyubey (キュゥべえKyūbē), also known as the Messenger of Magic (魔法の使者, Mahō no shisha), the White Fairy (白い妖精, Shiroi yōsei), or Cube (キューブ, Kyūbu), is a small being from another planet who grants wishes and certain magical abilities to human girls and young women in exchange for them making a contract with him, thus becoming Magical Girls. There isn't a single Kyubey, but rather a multitude of identical individuals or bodies with the same identity, as Kyubey is a kind of hive mind.

They are an alien race that claims to have arrived on Earth millions of years ago and seeks to save the universe from destruction. Their name was given by the magical girls themselves, but although Homura Akemi has referred to it as Incubator (インキュベータ Inkyubēta), and is the only one who initially uses that term for Kyubey, Sayaka later also uses it in Rebellion.

Due to his prominent role, Kyubey appears in all works belonging to the Puella Magi series as a main or secondary antagonist, although he could be considered the main antagonist of the franchise, since he always takes advantage of all the magical girls (good and bad) and all of them are considered his victims.

Etymology
Mami (マミ, Mami ): When written in katakana, the name has no particular meaning. However, there are several kanji variations, the most fitting being "elegant jewel" (雅珠, "elegant jewel"), due to Magical Girls storing their Soul Gems in accessories or rings. Phonetically, it sounds similar to "mom," referencing her role as an older sister to Madoka and Sayaka, as well as her close relationship with Nagisa Momoe in The Rebellion Story.

Tiro Finale (ティロ・フィナーレ, lit. Final Shot?): Mami's final attack. She summons a giant weapon and shouts the incantation phrase to kill her enemy, the Witch.
Tiro Duet (ティロデュエット, lit. Final Duo): A double attack that Madoka performs with Mami in The Rebellion Story. It is a variant of Mami's Tiro Finale. In episode 22 of Magia Record, Sayaka also uses the incantation to connect with Saint Mami and save her.

Appearance
As a civilian, Mami Tomoe is a young woman with a mature build, resembling a woman much more than the other members of the Sacred Quintet. She usually wears her blonde hair styled in two pigtails with bronze flower hairpins and has square yellow eyes. In her civilian form, Mami is primarily seen in her school uniform, which is customized with purple leggings and white Mary Jane shoes. Her hair is long and wavy when worn loose. As a Magical Girl, she wears a white blouse with a yellow stripe down the center, puffed sleeves, detachable white sleeves, a dark brown corset with white trim, brown fasteners with a white ribbon at the waist, and a muted yellow skirt with ruffles and dark brown trim. She also wears a brown beret with white fur sticking out, as well as purple leggings with thin vertical stripes, dark brown fingerless gloves, and matching high boots with white trim and muted yellow toes. She also wears brown bands on her shoulders and a yellow ribbon tied around her neck. His outfit resembles that of a rifleman.

Family
Mommy
She lived with her parents in their apartment and was happy with them. One day, the whole family was in a car accident and died, but Mami survived long enough to make a pact with Kyubey. She misses them and, since then, has isolated herself from society and takes care of the house alone. In Portable, it's revealed that Mami was thinking about how wonderful it was to have parents moments before the accident.

Personality
Mami Tomoe appears to be a very kind, sweet, and cheerful girl. Initially, she seems more mature and experienced than other magical girls. Mami is very kind to everyone, but she seems to dislike Homura Akemi. She takes pride in her actions and in saving people through her work as a mentor to other magical girls, as she has been fighting witches longer than anyone else.

However, she reveals to Madoka Kaname that she feels lonely and seems desperate for companions. She possesses a strong sense of justice, fighting witches to save others and generally helping innocent people, though she receives little reward for it. Because of this, she finds it difficult to have companions or team up with Magical Girls for long periods, as most of them compete for Grief Seeds and kill witches. She has little free time outside of witch hunting and struggles to make friends at school, leading her to isolate herself from the world.

Despite appearing mature and stable, she is emotionally weak and fragile at heart. Although she feels lonely, she seems to value companionship above all else.

Relations
Madoka Kaname: She meets Madoka while rescuing Kyubey from Homura. They get along very well, and Mami acts as Madoka's mentor, who adores Mami's magical girl nature. They appreciate each other and are good friends or teammates.
Sayaka Miki: She meets Sayaka while saving Kyubey from Homura. They get along very well, and Mami acts as Sayaka's mentor. Sayaka adores Mami's magical girl nature and wishes to be like her someday. They love each other very much and are very good friends, closer than Madoka or Kyoko are to Mami.
Kyoko Sakura: Although they were never seen interacting in the original anime series, Kyoko and Mami used to work together as Magical Girls. They met when Kyoko was chasing a witch from Kazamino to Mitakihara. They were good friends, but Mami still acted as Kyoko's mentor. In fact, Mami was the first friend Kyoko brought home. After Kyoko's family passed away, she also drifted apart from Mami, and they ended up fighting frequently. It was shown that Mami still cared for Kyoko even after their friendship partially faded.
Homura Akemi: In past timelines, Mami and Homura had a friendly relationship, caring for and supporting each other. However, in later timelines, Homura and Mami are rivals, as Homura attempted to kill Kyubey, who was a dear friend of Mami's when she was alive. The same is true for Bebe in The Rebellion Story.
Nagisa Momoe: Mami and Nagisa have been very close since The Rebellion Story and make a great team.

History
Before anime
Mami was an only child and lived with her parents before they died in a car accident. After being critically injured, Kyubey appeared to her, and Mami wished to live. As a magical girl, she longed to team up with others like herself, but found it difficult to find someone willing to collaborate. In the manga "The Different Story," it was revealed that she met Kyoko, and they began working together. After her family's death, Kyoko's relationship with Mami became strained, and they stopped being friends.

Connect (コネクト, Connect ¿): A technique used by Magical Girls in Magia Record. By joining their hands, they can fuse their weapons and create a powerful variant based on them.

Appearance
As a civilian, Kyoko has long, muted red hair, which she always wears tied back in a high ponytail with a black ribbon. She has bangs that frame her face as much as her piercing red eyes. Her signature outfit consists of a black crop top under a dark teal hoodie, unbuttoned at the bottom to reveal her navel. She wears dark blue denim shorts with fur trim and brown knee-high boots. In The Rebellion Story, she is seen in her school uniform, which is customized with black knee-high socks and the standard brown loafers. As a Magical Girl, she wears a maroon dress with an opening for her Soul Gem and a mandarin collar with white trim. Her Soul Gem is located on her upper chest. The edges of her dress are covered with thick white ruffles that cover the opening and the back. She wears light gray sleeves that reach her biceps with black buttoned cuffs around her wrists. Underneath, she wears a mauve pleated skirt and a black corset with white details. She has red knee-high boots with white cuffs and white symbols just below them that match the opening of her blouse, and black thigh-high stockings.

Personality
Kyoko is a headstrong girl with a fiery or tomboyish personality. Although she acts self-centered, most of her outward behavior is a facade. In reality, Kyoko is kind and compassionate when she sees her loved ones in trouble. After losing her entire family due to the wish she made for her father, she vowed never to sacrifice herself for others again, believing it would only bring tragedy and suffering. It's believed she was afraid of getting hurt again, as well as hurting the people she loved most. After her father lost his family's support, she and her family nearly starved to death on several occasions, which is why she loves to eat and hates those who waste food. Madoka: Madoka Kaname and Kyoko have a peculiar relationship. They seem to get along better with Kyoko than most, but they rarely agree on anything. While Kyoko likes to argue, Madoka prefers dialogue, making them polar opposites.

Mami: Mami Tomoe and Kyoko are shown to be very close in the spin-off "The Different Story," but they later have a fight that leads to the dissolution of their team and their separation, although the conflict is never resolved (since Mami dies in the anime and Kyoko in "The Different Story"). From her arrival at Mitakihara High School in the first episode, Homura is shown to be highly intelligent, athletic, aloof, and cold. In episode four, it's revealed that she became this way due to the immense suffering she endured during her time as a Magical Girl. Because of this, she doesn't want Madoka Kanames to become a Magical Girl and goes to great lengths to prevent her from making a wish to Kyubey, even attempting to harm or kill the cat-like creature. Despite her cold demeanor towards others, she cares deeply for them, especially Madoka, as her sole objective since making her wish has been to protect her.

In the original timeline where her journey began, Homura is portrayed and known at school for her lack of confidence. She was also known for her physical inability to perform in PE class; she would become dizzy even with the simplest warm-up exercises, likely due to the time she spent in the hospital for her heart condition. This led to her being bullied, as heard in Drama CD 1. Overwhelmed by her perception of worthlessness, she begins to question the value of her existence as she wanders through a labyrinth of witches. This timeline ends with Madoka and Homura lying together amidst the rubble of Walpurgisnacht's destruction, defeated. Their Soul Gems are clouded. Homura has no Pain Seed, but Madoka had one secretly stored away, so she suddenly inserts it into Homura's Soul Gem, healing her. Madoka asks Homura to travel back in time and save her and everyone else from making a contract with Kyubey. Homura agrees. She shoots and shatters Madoka's Soul Gem at Madoka's request, killing her as she weeps and laments. It is in the reset of this timeline—the fourth timeline—that Homura sheds her glasses and braids and transforms into the Homura we see from then on.

Chronology 2
Homura, now a Magical Girl, transfers back to the school with renewed confidence and enthusiasm. She goes straight to Madoka after her name appears on the blackboard and introduces herself as a Magical Girl, much to the class's dismay and Madoka's embarrassment. After an indeterminate amount of time, she reunites with Madoka and Mami. With Madoka and Mami as her trainers, she begins training to use her time magic in conjunction with melee weapons, eventually constructing bombs to use as offensive weapons. In this timeline, Homura fights her first Witch, and with Mami and Madoka's help, manages to defeat her. This timeline ends when Madoka's Soul Gem is corrupted during the battle against Walpurgisnacht, and she is on the verge of becoming a Witch.
