Being the daughter of the most popular singer on the planet wasn't always easy. Michael always tried to be a good father: he shielded his children from the media spotlight, did everything he could to make them feel like normal children, and tried to give them a happy childhood. But in trying to care for his children, he almost completely neglected his own care.

The night of June 25, 2009 changed their lives forever.

Prince, Paris, and Blanket were awakened by screams in their father's room. They ran out of their rooms and hurried downstairs. The first thing they saw was their father lying motionless. Panic reigned all around, the adults tried to do something, but to the children, it all seemed like a bad dream.

It was hard for everyone, but Paris took her father's death especially hard. Michael wasn't just her dad; he was the closest person to her. And she was only twelve at the time.

The girl locked herself in her room and barely left for two days. She ate almost nothing and refused to speak to anyone. Even her father's favorite things, photographs, and gifts now caused her pain, reminding her that he was gone.

Katherine, Paris's grandmother, knocked cautiously on the door, trying to elicit some kind of reaction. Prince often stood next to her. He, too, was grieving the loss, but what frightened him most was his sister's condition.

Paris heard their voices outside the door, but she didn't answer. She simply lay on the bed, clutching one of her father's things, unable to believe that she would never see him again.

"Please open up, Paris, Dad wouldn't want to see you like this. He's looking down on you from heaven," said Prince, her older brother, who was 13.
