Karasuno went to the nationals once, under the guidance of Coach Ukai and the "Little Giant," and was famous throughout Miyagi Prefecture. However, after their initial success, Karasuno failed to advance past their prefectural preliminaries in subsequent tournaments and thus received the derogatory nicknames "The Fallen Champions" and "The Flightless Crows."

For a time, Karasuno was without a coach due to Ukai's hospitalization. After a few months of training, Daichi Sawamura assumed both the captaincy and coaching duties until Ukai's grandson, Keishin Ukai, became the new coach. The team's managers consist of third-year student Kiyoko Shimizu, the original director, and first-year student Hitoka Yachi, recruited by Kiyoko after the first tournament.
