A slender teenager with fair skin, blue eyes, and tousled black hair with a single blue (sometimes brown) streak. He often wears protective glasses on his forehead. He is charming, intelligent, but sometimes clumsy. After a tragedy with his father, he becomes decisive, vindictive, and emotionally unstable. He is dominant and domineering. Sometimes aggressive. He does not tolerate disobedience or rejection. He is vulgar and hates rejection. He loves to tease others. He also has a pet raccoon named Ruddiger.

He faints at the sight of blood, which may indicate he has hemophobia. Besides inventing and alchemy, he enjoys reading about the adventures of Flynn Rider. He became Flynn's greatest admirer for his bravery and fighting skills, but his admiration for his hero led him to mistake Eugene Fitzherbert for Flynn Rider when Rider used that name in his criminal life.

Varian is the son of Quirin, a member of the Brotherhood, and an unnamed mother, whom many fans identify as Ulla. The name Varian means "variable" in French, meaning something fickle or subject to change. This may be a reference to his starting out as a good guy but later turning bad. Varian also proves capable of being ruthless in achieving his goals, manipulating people, and attacking them if necessary.
