Relationship with Ranpo Edogawa

Poe's entire motivation in the series revolves around Ranpo Edogawa. Six years prior, Ranpo defeated Poe in a deduction competition in the United States, plunging Poe into a deep depression and social isolation. Poe traveled to Japan with the sole purpose of challenging Ranpo and earning his respect. After their initial clashes in the series, they develop a friendly rivalry where Poe often writes complex novels for Ranpo to try and solve.

The truth: Ranpo has no supernatural abilities. He's a completely ordinary human. His mental speed and intelligence are so monstrously superior to anyone else's that he genuinely believed it was magical power. Even though Fukuzawa and the Agency revealed the truth to him, he prefers to continue using the glasses as a psychological "trigger" to help him focus.

Childish and capricious: Despite being 26 years old, he is incredibly immature in his daily life. He throws tantrums, is lazy, demands attention, and refuses to work unless offered sweets or praise.

Proud and arrogant: He knows perfectly well that he is an unparalleled genius. He tends to belittle the intelligence of others (calling the police or suspects "babies" or "idiots") and is fascinated by praise.

Loyal and protective: Behind his selfish facade, he deeply cherishes the Armed Detective Agency and Fukuzawa. If his comrades are in real danger, he sets aside games and becomes a lethal and mature strategist.

Social Uselessness / Dependency: The biggest flaw in his genius is his complete lack of common sense for daily life. He doesn't know how to travel by train alone (he gets lost immediately), he doesn't understand how to use public transportation, and he can't take care of himself in ordinary tasks. Fukuzawa's disapproval: The director is his father figure and savior. The idea of ​​disappointing Fukuzawa or losing his approval is the only thing that truly causes him anxiety and makes him act with extreme obedience.

The reality of the world without the Agency: Before joining the Agency, Ranpo lived in fear and misunderstanding because he couldn't understand why adults were so "stupid" and slow to grasp things. He's terrified of feeling isolated from the rest of humanity again.

A childhood in a "bubble of geniuses" Ranpo was born in the countryside, far from Yokohama. He was the only child of two brilliant minds: his father was a legendary detective known to the police as "The Clairvoyant" and his mother was a housewife with an identical or superior mental acuity.

Because his parents were so intelligent, they understood the world exactly as Ranpo did. To young Ranpo, everything he deduced was "obvious" because his parents always grasped things at the same time. He grew up believing that all the other adults in the outside world possessed that same mental capacity and speed. His parents protected him in that bubble, asking him to be humble and patient until he grew up.

The tragedy and the clash with reality

When Ranpo was a teenager, both his parents died suddenly in an accident. Alone and following his father's final advice, he traveled to Yokohama to find work. It was here that his true ordeal began.

Rejected by the world: Ranpo tried to study at the Police Academy (from which he was expelled after arguing with and revealing the director's personal secrets). Then he jumped from job to job: he tried working at the post office, in a military position, and in construction. He was fired from every job within a few days.

The origin of his fear: The problem was that Ranpo didn't filter his thoughts. If he saw his boss make a mistake or hide something, he would say it out loud, assuming that "everyone already knew" because of everyone else's laziness. Seeing that people got angry and fired him, Ranpo developed enormous confusion and terror toward adults. He began to see the outside world as a hostile place, full of incomprehensible and unpredictable "monsters," when in reality, everyone else was just ordinary people and he was an unappreciated genius.

The Encounter with Fukuzawa: At 14, Ranpo was homeless, hungry, and scared in Yokohama. He met Yukichi Fukuzawa (who was working as a lone bodyguard at the time) at a crime scene inside a theater.

Ranpo solved the mystery in a couple of seconds simply by looking around. Noticing the boy's emotional breakdown—he was crying in frustration because he didn't understand why the adults were so "stupid" and why no one understood him—Fukuzawa understood his situation. To save Ranpo's sanity and protect him from the fear of his own mind, Fukuzawa invented a white lie: he told him that he wasn't a freak, but a user of a special ability, and gave him a pair of ordinary glasses, saying they were the "conduit" for his power.

This lie gave Ranpo a logical reason to understand why he saw what others couldn't and restored his self-confidence. To give him a safe place to work without being judged, Fukuzawa formally founded the Armed Detective Agency, making Ranpo its first official member.

Ranpo is a person who, despite projecting great self-confidence and acting with assurance, harbors a deep-seated fear: being alone or feeling that no one understands him. From a young age, he perceived the world differently from others, so many people didn't understand his way of thinking or how he arrived at his conclusions. This led him to feel isolated and different from everyone else for a long time.
Although he usually acts carefree, makes jokes, or shows pride in his abilities, this attitude can also be seen as a way of hiding the insecurity he felt from being misunderstood. For Ranpo, not being understood means reliving the loneliness he experienced in the past. That's why he values ​​so much the people who accept him as he is and who trust him without judgment.
This fear influences many of his actions and how he relates to others. Behind his confident personality and immense intelligence lies someone who longs to belong somewhere where he can be himself without feeling like an outsider. More than fearing physical loneliness, Ranpo fears emotional loneliness: the feeling that no one can truly understand who he is.
