Misato Katsuragi

Misato Katsuragi (葛城 ミサト, , Katsuragi Misato ?) is one of the main characters of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

She is in charge of tactical operations within the NERV organization, responsible for coordinating the Evangelion Units in combat against the Angels, holding the rank of captain. Later, she is promoted to the rank of major.

She is the daughter of Dr. Katsuragi and was the sole survivor of the Second Impact. In 2015, she was the instructor of Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley Soryu, the respective pilots of the Evangelion units.
Sometimes it uses unorthodox methods to achieve the desired objectives, a good example being the operation to kill Gaghiel, which consisted of making the angel swallow two battleships, thanks to Unit-02 opening its jaws, and then firing all the cannons at its core, located in the center of the mouth.

In the series, she is portrayed as a physically attractive woman who draws attention with her seductive and flirtatious personality.
She always wears a loose red jacket with a short, sleeveless, high-necked dress and brown boots. She is almost always seen wearing a necklace with a cross, which she has had since childhood. Throughout the series, Misato wears various outfits, which vary depending on the situation. These include her NERV uniform for formal meetings and her casual clothes for lounging at home.

Misato is witty, outgoing, and easygoing. Her carefree attitude defines her, although she can sometimes behave childishly and immaturely. Cooking isn't her strong suit, so she often relies on instant food. She also has a tendency to get drunk and keeps her apartment in a constant state of disarray.

She usually appears cheerful and optimistic, and occasionally adopts a seductive demeanor. Despite this attitude, she is an intelligent and highly professional woman. She leads the organization's operations with great skill, demonstrating remarkable proficiency in both planning and improvising military tactics when the situation demands it (as seen in Operation Yashima).

The entire world is in a state of total collapse and decay. Following the Second Impact of the year 2000, much of the planet was devastated, the oceans turned red, and civilization as we know it was destroyed, leaving the world plunged into perpetual winter and political chaos.

The world's major powers either relocated or collapsed. Although NERV has branches in several countries (such as Germany and the United States), many nations blindly entrust their defense against the Angels to the Japanese organization, believing it to be the only area where the conflict is taking place.

The Second Impact melted the polar ice caps, triggering massive tsunamis and raising sea levels. This altered the tilt of the Earth's axis, leaving Japan in perpetual summer, while other regions of the globe were plunged into darkness and cold.

Although (in this universe, yes, I based it on the light novels) NERV is reorganized as a global defense force, and the DigiDestined (now 17-year-old teenagers) live more civilized lives, the outside world is a battleground of technological and engineering warfare. Tokyo-3 is the main fortress city where Neon Genesis Evangelion takes place. Built in Kanagawa Prefecture (on the real-life area of ​​Hakone), it serves as a base for NERV and is strategically designed not only as a substitute capital, but also as a trap filled with heavy weaponry to intercept the Angels.

The GeoFront (ジオフロント, Shiofuronto?, Geofront) is a massive spherical underground cavity located beneath the city of Tokyo-3. It contains NERV's base of operations.
Originally, the GeoFront was a gigantic sphere 13.75 kilometers in diameter. Over time, its interior filled with debris due to shifts in the Earth's crust. Currently, only a small portion of its upper pole has been unearthed, forming a dome-shaped underground cavern.

The cavern is 6 kilometers in diameter and 900 meters high at its highest point. The top was flattened, forming a smooth disc 2 kilometers in diameter.

At the center of this disc are the mobile buildings of Tokyo-3, which form a cluster called "Roof City" (Tenjou Toushi) when retracted inwards. Between the surface and the cavern's ceiling are 22 armored plates to defend the base from Angel attacks.

When NERV began construction of its headquarters, it excavated to add access tunnels, roads, and monorails to the surface. Furthermore, the interior of the cavern was extensively modified, adding vast forests and a large artificial lake, all of which simulate the outside environment. The Evangelions were designed based on a specific type of Japanese monster called "Oni," commonly translated as "ogre" or "demon." Regarding this, Hideaki Anno said:

Instead of using angular designs with square shapes like Gundams and other previous mecha, the Evangelion design is characterized by having smooth curves and flowing lines, giving the impression that it is not really a robot, but a giant living being.

The final design is the result of numerous changes throughout production. The head, in particular, underwent many alterations. Most notably, the "demonic" aspects of the Evangelion were largely removed.

Officially, the internal battery charge varies: one minute using all functions (Racing Mode), five minutes in minimum consumption mode (Normal Mode) and sixteen hours if only used to keep the pilot alive (Slow Mode).

Several dozen prototypes were built, but all were rejected. These can be seen in the EVA graveyard, hidden on one of the lowest levels of Terminal Dogma. They all have red and orange armor. The first prototype had five eyes. In addition, the skulls of some units show a significant variation in the face, with some features resembling human heads.
Most of the organic structures of these prototypes have decomposed, leaving only the head connected to the spine. Many of them exhibit severe skeletal deformities, which is the reason for their rejection.
