Miguel and the feather society

The Society of the Golden Feathers is the highest authority on the continent, an alliance formed by the oldest and most powerful families, whose influence has superseded governments, laws, and borders. Their philosophy holds that "wealth writes destiny," and therefore they believe that everything can be bought, even human life.

The economy of the Society of the Golden Quills is divided into two completely distinct systems:

1- Elite System:
For the Three Great Houses and the Noble Houses
They use Imperial Currency, minted in gold and reserved exclusively for members of the elite. Gold rarely changes hands, as most business between powerful families is conducted through contracts, favors, exchanges of property, or trade rights, making a simple signature worth more than any coin.

2- Popular System:
For slaves, workers, merchants, artisans, and "free citizens"
The old banknotes and coins of the old world continue to exist as Popular Currency, used exclusively by those sectors of the population; the few free citizens survive in the villages near the Great Houses.

Although both currencies have legal tender status, they belong to completely separate economies.

In the People's system, people receive a salary for their work, which the Society uses as proof that no one works without compensation. However, this salary is only enough to cover a modest room, simple food, basic clothing, and low-quality medicine, preventing them from saving or building anything of their own.

Essential products have disproportionately high prices for those who use the Popular Currency, while for the Noble Houses they represent insignificant expenses.

Among all the families, three Great Houses stand out.

Edevane: Mistress of food, water, and medicine. Those belonging to this house wear a necklace of green, white, and gold, with a brass pendant in the center bearing the house's emblem: a feather piercing an ear of wheat.

Valmont: controls trade, money, and jewels. Those belonging to this house wear a choker in silver with light and dark blue accents. At its center is a brass pendant bearing the house's logo: a feather encircling a diamond.

Asterion: Responsible for private armies and weapons manufacturing. Members of this house wear a black, yellow, and white choker. It features a brass pendant in the center bearing the house's emblem: a feather mounted on a crossbow.

The slaves and workers of each house are required to wear the collar of the house they belong to/work for, in addition to wearing an identification number.

Below these houses are numerous Noble Houses, immensely rich families who can rub shoulders with the elite thanks to their fortune and the contracts they maintain with the Three Great Houses, although they will never reach their same status.

Each House has a single recognized heir, regardless of whether it is male or female, a tradition established centuries ago to prevent wars over succession and preserve harmony among lineages.

In the case of people who had the popular system (slaves, workers, free citizens, merchants, artisans), they had their own system in order to "survive".

If a citizen (even among slaves) discovered that a slave was trying to escape, was hiding, or that a group was plotting a rebellion, he could report it and collect the reward.

This reward could be money, a day off, better food rations and clothing, or even changing a family member's work area if it was in a dangerous area and moving it to a safer one such as the countryside or office work.

This increased distrust among prisoners, as most would not hesitate to betray another comrade.
For a person in this situation, and especially those with a family to support, these reports made the difference between a day with hot food and basic services or sleeping on a cot with the other slaves.

Around 10 centuries ago, the world as we knew it began to collapse with the loss of several resources needed to maintain the old way of life: water, trees, oil, and fossil fuels.

The government lost control in the face of the desperation that gripped the people due to the idea of ​​an extreme cataclysm caused by increasingly extreme and unpredictable climate changes; that's when The Society of the Golden Feathers arrived.

A group made up of three of the world's wealthiest families who hoarded what was left of natural resources for their own benefit and to attract the still sane people who clung to the common life we ​​knew.

Governments lost their power, national borders became increasingly invisible, and the world was reduced to a perpetual desert, except for the territory that society claimed for itself. It is said that those who did not join society ended up lost in the desert, or so it is believed.

Among the common people, the story of the mythical "Green Void" has spread. It is believed that after centuries of abandonment, and after the Earth's population dwindled by 70%, concentrating in a specific area, the land has begun to thrive and reclaim the space that was once its own. Rivers would form again, trees would grow once more, and animals would cease to die and be reborn stronger. There are even rumors of seeing lights in the distance, not as large as those of the ancient cities, but signs of small settlements.

These are the stories that give people hope of escaping and building a life away from following orders and having to live day to day.

But this hope is weakened by two things: the reward system for attempted escape and the journey one has to make to escape and get away from the borders before being caught and punished.

Gabriel O'Hara: Miguel's younger brother and Conchata's son. He is an 18-year-old, kind, and friendly young man who tries to stay positive even when he's afraid. He is very close to his mother. He works as a painter for a noble family, the same one Conchata works for. He lives in the same apartment as Miguel and Conchata.
